Fine-grained estimation of galaxy merger stages from observations is a key problem useful for validation of our current theoretical understanding of galaxy formation. To this end, we demonstrate a CNN-based regression model that is able to predict, for the first time, using a single image, the merger stage relative to the first perigee passage with a median error of 38.3 million years (Myrs) over a period of 400 Myrs. This model uses no specific dynamical modeling and learns only from simulated merger events. We show that our model provides reasonable estimates on real observations, approximately matching prior estimates provided by detailed dynamical modeling. We provide a preliminary interpretability analysis of our models, and demonstrate first steps toward calibrated uncertainty estimation.

Domain adaptation techniques for improved cross-domain study of galaxy mergers

2020-11-06 · A. Ćiprijanović, D. Kafkes, S. Jenkins, K. Downey 외

In astronomy, neural networks are often trained on simulated data with the prospect of being applied to real observations. Unfortunately, simply training a deep neural network on images from one domain does not guarantee…

Using transfer learning to detect galaxy mergers

2018-05-25 · Sandro Ackermann, Kevin Schawinski, Ce Zhang, Anna K. Weigel 외

We investigate the use of deep convolutional neural networks (deep CNNs) for automatic visual detection of galaxy mergers. Moreover, we investigate the use of transfer learning in conjunction with CNNs, by retraining net…

We present Galaxy Zoo DECaLS: detailed visual morphological classifications for Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey images of galaxies within the SDSS DR8 footprint. Deeper DECaLS images (r=23.6 vs. r=22.2 from SDSS) reveal…

Anomaly detection in radio galaxy data with trainable COSFIRE filters

2025-05-24 · Steven Ndung'u, Trienko Grobler, Stefan J. Wijnholds, George Azzopardi

Detecting anomalies in radio astronomy is challenging due to the vast amounts of data and the rarity of labeled anomalous examples. Addressing this challenge requires efficient methods capable of identifying unusual radi…

The Formation and Survival of Discs in a Lambda-CDM Universe

2008-12-04 · Cecilia Scannapieco, Simon D. M. White, Volker Springel, Patricia B. Tissera

We study the formation of galaxies in a Lambda-CDM Universe using high resolution hydrodynamical simulations with a multiphase treatment of gas, cooling and feedback, focusing on the formation of discs. Our simulations f…
