A Practical Deep Learning-Based Acoustic Side Channel Attack on Keyboards

2023-08-02 · Joshua Harrison, Ehsan Toreini, Maryam Mehrnezhad

With recent developments in deep learning, the ubiquity of micro-phones and the rise in online services via personal devices, acoustic side channel attacks present a greater threat to keyboards than ever. This paper presents a practical implementation of a state-of-the-art deep learning model in order to classify laptop keystrokes, using a smartphone integrated microphone. When trained on keystrokes recorded by a nearby phone, the classifier achieved an accuracy of 95%, the highest accuracy seen without the use of a language model. When trained on keystrokes recorded using the video-conferencing software Zoom, an accuracy of 93% was achieved, a new best for the medium. Our results prove the practicality of these side channel attacks via off-the-shelf equipment and algorithms. We discuss a series of mitigation methods to protect users against these series of attacks.

Thermal (and Hybrid Thermal/Audio) Side-Channel Attacks on Keyboard Input

2022-10-05 · Tyler Kaczmarek, Ercan Ozturk, Pier Paolo Tricomi, Gene Tsudik

To date, there has been no systematic investigation of thermal profiles of keyboards, and thus no efforts have been made to secure them. This serves as our main motivation for constructing a means for password harvesting…

Improving Acoustic Side-Channel Attacks on Keyboards Using Transformers and Large Language Models

2025-02-13 · Jin Hyun Park, Seyyed Ali Ayati, Yichen Cai

The increasing prevalence of microphones in everyday devices and the growing reliance on online services have amplified the risk of acoustic side-channel attacks (ASCAs) targeting keyboards. This study explores deep lear…

Fingerprinting Robot Movements via Acoustic Side Channel

2022-09-21 · Ryan Shah, Mujeeb Ahmed, Shishir Nagaraja

In this paper, we present an acoustic side channel attack which makes use of smartphone microphones recording a robot in operation to exploit acoustic properties of the sound to fingerprint a robot's movements. In this w…

Side-Channel Attacks Bypass Protection in 3D Printers

Active Motor Noise Cancellation (AMNC) ships in commercial fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printers as a hardware countermeasure against acoustic side-channel attacks that target intellectual property (IP). We present…

Hearing your touch: A new acoustic side channel on smartphones

2019-03-26 · Ilia Shumailov, Laurent Simon, Jeff Yan, Ross Anderson

We present the first acoustic side-channel attack that recovers what users type on the virtual keyboard of their touch-screen smartphone or tablet. When a user taps the screen with a finger, the tap generates a sound wav…
