A Step Towards Uncovering The Structure of Multistable Neural Networks

2022-10-06 · Magnus Tournoy, Brent Doiron

We study how the connectivity within a recurrent neural network determines and is determined by the multistable solutions of network activity. To gain analytic tractability we let neural activation be a non-smooth Heaviside step function. This nonlinearity partitions the phase space into regions with different, yet linear dynamics. In each region either a stable equilibrium state exists, or network activity flows to outside of the region. The stable states are identified by their semipositivity constraints on the synaptic weight matrix. The restrictions can be separated by their effects on the signs or the strengths of the connections. Exact results on network topology, sign stability, weight matrix factorization, pattern completion and pattern coupling are derived and proven. Our work may lay the foundation for multistability in more complex recurrent neural networks.

Multistability of Small Reaction Networks

For three typical sets of small reaction networks (networks with two reactions, one irreversible and one reversible reaction, or two reversible-reaction pairs), we completely answer the challenging question: what is the …

Can multivariate Granger causality detect directed connectivity of a multistable and dynamic biological decision network model?

2024-08-02 · Abdoreza Asadpour, KongFatt Wong-Lin

Extracting causal connections can advance interpretable AI and machine learning. Granger causality (GC) is a robust statistical method for estimating directed influences (DC) between signals. While GC has been widely app…

Data-driven prediction of multistable systems from sparse measurements

2020-10-28 · Bryan Chu, Mohammad Farazmand

We develop a data-driven method, based on semi-supervised classification, to predict the asymptotic state of multistable systems when only sparse spatial measurements of the system are feasible. Our method predicts the a…
