Active Learning for Regression by Inverse Distance Weighting
This paper proposes an active learning (AL) algorithm to solve regression problems based on inverse-distance weighting functions for selecting the feature vectors to query. The algorithm has the following features: (i) supports both pool-based and population-based sampling; (ii) is not tailored to a particular class of predictors; (iii) can handle known and unknown constraints on the queryable feature vectors; and (iv) can run either sequentially, or in batch mode, depending on how often the predictor is retrained. The potentials of the method are shown in numerical tests on illustrative synthetic problems and real-world datasets. An implementation of the algorithm, which we call IDEAL (Inverse-Distance based Exploration for Active Learning), is available at http://cse.lab.imtlucca.it/~bemporad/ideal.

Feature Weighting Improves Pool-Based Sequential Active Learning for Regression
Pool-based sequential active learning for regression (ALR) optimally selects a small number of samples sequentially from a large pool of unlabeled samples to label, so that a more accurate regression model can be constru…
Active LearningAugmented Inverse Hybrid Weighting: Robust Inference under Deterministic and Random Distribution Shifts
Reweighting source samples to match a target covariate distribution is a standard response to distribution shift when generalizing evidence from one population to another. This strategy is well suited to deterministic, l…
Covariate Balancing and the Equivalence of Weighting and Doubly Robust Estimators of Average Treatment Effects
We show that when the propensity score is estimated using a suitable covariate balancing procedure, the commonly used inverse probability weighting (IPW) estimator, augmented inverse probability weighting (AIPW) with lin…
Inverse distance weighting attention
We report the effects of replacing the scaled dot-product (within softmax) attention with the negative-log of Euclidean distance. This form of attention simplifies to inverse distance weighting interpolation. Used in sim…
Autocart -- spatially-aware regression trees for ecological and spatial modeling
Many ecological and spatial processes are complex in nature and are not accurately modeled by linear models. Regression trees promise to handle the high-order interactions that are present in ecological and spatial datas…
