ASP-based Discovery of Semi-Markovian Causal Models under Weaker Assumptions

2019-06-06 · Zhalama, Jiji Zhang, Frederick Eberhardt, Wolfgang Mayer, Mark Junjie Li

In recent years the possibility of relaxing the so-called Faithfulness assumption in automated causal discovery has been investigated. The investigation showed (1) that the Faithfulness assumption can be weakened in various ways that in an important sense preserve its power, and (2) that weakening of Faithfulness may help to speed up methods based on Answer Set Programming. However, this line of work has so far only considered the discovery of causal models without latent variables. In this paper, we study weakenings of Faithfulness for constraint-based discovery of semi-Markovian causal models, which accommodate the possibility of latent variables, and show that both (1) and (2) remain the case in this more realistic setting.

A Weaker Faithfulness Assumption based on Triple Interactions

2020-10-27 · Alexander Marx, Arthur Gretton, Joris M. Mooij

One of the core assumptions in causal discovery is the faithfulness assumption, i.e., assuming that independencies found in the data are due to separations in the true causal graph. This assumption can, however, be viola…

Causal computations in Semi Markovian Structural Causal Models using divide and conquer

2025-11-17 · Anna Rodum Bjøru, Rafael Cabañas, Helge Langseth, Antonio Salmerón arxiv

Recently, Bjøru et al. proposed a novel divide-and-conquer algorithm for bounding counterfactual probabilities in structural causal models (SCMs). They assumed that the SCMs were learned from purely observational data, l…

Causal discovery under mean independence and linearity

Causal discovery methods such as LiNGAM identify causal structure from observational data by assuming mutually independent disturbances. This assumption is fragile: shared volatility, common scale effects, or other forms…

Ordering-Based Causal Structure Learning in the Presence of Latent Variables

2019-10-20 · Daniel Irving Bernstein, Basil Saeed, Chandler Squires, Caroline Uhler

We consider the task of learning a causal graph in the presence of latent confounders given i.i.d.~samples from the model. While current algorithms for causal structure discovery in the presence of latent confounders are…

Nonlinearity, Feedback and Uniform Consistency in Causal Structural Learning

The goal of Causal Discovery is to find automated search methods for learning causal structures from observational data. In some cases all variables of the interested causal mechanism are measured, and the task is to pre…
