Balancing Accuracy and Fairness for Interactive Recommendation with Reinforcement Learning

2021-06-25 · Weiwen Liu, Feng Liu, Ruiming Tang, Ben Liao, Guangyong Chen, Pheng Ann Heng

Fairness in recommendation has attracted increasing attention due to bias and discrimination possibly caused by traditional recommenders. In Interactive Recommender Systems (IRS), user preferences and the system's fairness status are constantly changing over time. Existing fairness-aware recommenders mainly consider fairness in static settings. Directly applying existing methods to IRS will result in poor recommendation. To resolve this problem, we propose a reinforcement learning based framework, FairRec, to dynamically maintain a long-term balance between accuracy and fairness in IRS. User preferences and the system's fairness status are jointly compressed into the state representation to generate recommendations. FairRec aims at maximizing our designed cumulative reward that combines accuracy and fairness. Extensive experiments validate that FairRec can improve fairness, while preserving good recommendation quality.

Proactive Guiding Strategy for Item-side Fairness in Interactive Recommendation

2026-03-03 · Chongjun Xia, Xiaoyu Shi, Hong Xie, Xianzhi Wang 외 arxiv

Item-side fairness is crucial for ensuring the fair exposure of long-tail items in interactive recommender systems. Existing approaches promote the exposure of long-tail items by directly incorporating them into recommen…

Fairness Begins with State: Purifying Latent Preferences for Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning in Interactive Recommendation

2026-03-04 · Yun Lu, Xiaoyu Shi, Hong Xie, Xiangyu Zhao 외 arxiv

Interactive recommender systems (IRS) are increasingly optimized with Reinforcement Learning (RL) to capture the sequential nature of user-system dynamics. However, existing fairness-aware methods often suffer from a fun…

Revisiting Fairness-aware Interactive Recommendation: Item Lifecycle as a Control Knob

2025-11-20 · Yun Lu, Xiaoyu Shi, Hong Xie, Chongjun Xia 외 arxiv

This paper revisits fairness-aware interactive recommendation (e.g., TikTok, KuaiShou) by introducing a novel control knob, i.e., the lifecycle of items. We make threefold contributions. First, we conduct a comprehensive…
