Beyond Laurel/Yanny: An Autoencoder-Enabled Search for Polyperceivable Audio

2021-08-01 · ACL 2021 5 · Kartik Chandra, Chuma Kabaghe, Gregory Valiant

The famous {`}laurel/yanny{''} phenomenon references an audio clip that elicits dramatically different responses from different listeners. For the original clip, roughly half the population hears the word {}laurel,{''} while the other half hears {}yanny.{''} How common are such {}polyperceivable{''} audio clips? In this paper we apply ML techniques to study the prevalence of polyperceivability in spoken language. We devise a metric that correlates with polyperceivability of audio clips, use it to efficiently find new {`}laurel/yanny{''}-type examples, and validate these results with human experiments. Our results suggest that polyperceivable examples are surprisingly prevalent in natural language, existing for {\textgreater}2{\%} of English words.

A Surprising Density of Illusionable Natural Speech

2019-06-03 · Melody Y. Guan, Gregory Valiant

Recent work on adversarial examples has demonstrated that most natural inputs can be perturbed to fool even state-of-the-art machine learning systems. But does this happen for humans as well? In this work, we investigate…

LAuReL: Learned Augmented Residual Layer

2024-11-12 · Gaurav Menghani, Ravi Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar

One of the core pillars of efficient deep learning methods is architectural improvements such as the residual/skip connection, which has led to significantly better model convergence and quality. Since then the residual …
