Category Theory in Machine Learning

2021-06-13 · Dan Shiebler, Bruno Gavranović, Paul Wilson

Over the past two decades machine learning has permeated almost every realm of technology. At the same time, many researchers have begun using category theory as a unifying language, facilitating communication between different scientific disciplines. It is therefore unsurprising that there is a burgeoning interest in applying category theory to machine learning. We aim to document the motivations, goals and common themes across these applications. We touch on gradient-based learning, probability, and equivariant learning.

Using Enriched Category Theory to Construct the Nearest Neighbour Classification Algorithm

2023-12-27 · Matthew Pugh, Jo Grundy, Corina Cirstea, Nick Harris

This paper is the first to construct and motivate a Machine Learning algorithm solely with Enriched Category Theory, supplementing evidence that Category Theory can provide valuable insights into the construction and exp…

Category-Theoretical and Topos-Theoretical Frameworks in Machine Learning: A Survey

2024-08-26 · Yiyang Jia, Guohong Peng, Zheng Yang, Tianhao Chen

In this survey, we provide an overview of category theory-derived machine learning from four mainstream perspectives: gradient-based learning, probability-based learning, invariance and equivalence-based learning, and to…

A Convenient Category for Higher-Order Probability Theory

2017-01-10 · Chris Heunen, Ohad Kammar, Sam Staton, Hongseok Yang

Higher-order probabilistic programming languages allow programmers to write sophisticated models in machine learning and statistics in a succinct and structured way, but step outside the standard measure-theoretic formal…

Human Active Learning

2008-12-01 · NeurIPS 2008 12 · Rui M. Castro, Charles Kalish, Robert Nowak, Ruichen Qian 외

We investigate a topic at the interface of machine learning and cognitive science. Human active learning, where learners can actively query the world for information, is contrasted with passive learning from random examp…
