Contesting Artificial Moral Agents

2026-02-10 · Aisha Aijaz arxiv

There has been much discourse on the ethics of AI, to the extent that there are now systems that possess inherent moral reasoning. Such machines are now formally known as Artificial Moral Agents or AMAs. However, there is a requirement for a dedicated framework that can contest the morality of these systems. This paper proposes a 5E framework for contesting AMAs based on five grounds: ethical, epistemological, explainable, empirical, and evaluative. It further includes the spheres of ethical influences at individual, local, societal, and global levels. Lastly, the framework contributes a provisional timeline that indicates where developers of AMA technologies may anticipate contestation, or may self-contest in order to adhere to value-aligned development of truly moral AI systems.

What Would Jiminy Cricket Do? Towards Agents That Behave Morally

2021-10-25 · Dan Hendrycks, Mantas Mazeika, Andy Zou, Sahil Patel 외

When making everyday decisions, people are guided by their conscience, an internal sense of right and wrong. By contrast, artificial agents are currently not endowed with a moral sense. As a consequence, they may learn t…

Quasi-Dilemmas for Artificial Moral Agents

2018-07-06 · Daniel Kasenberg, Vasanth Sarathy, Thomas Arnold, Matthias Scheutz 외

In this paper we describe moral quasi-dilemmas (MQDs): situations similar to moral dilemmas, but in which an agent is unsure whether exploring the plan space or the world may reveal a course of action that satisfies all …

Doing the right thing for the right reason: Evaluating artificial moral cognition by probing cost insensitivity

2023-05-29 · Yiran Mao, Madeline G. Reinecke, Markus Kunesch, Edgar A. Duéñez-Guzmán 외

Is it possible to evaluate the moral cognition of complex artificial agents? In this work, we take a look at one aspect of morality: `doing the right thing for the right reasons.' We propose a behavior-based analysis of …

Can Artificial Intelligence Embody Moral Values?

Why Machines Can't Be Moral: Turing's Halting Problem and the Moral Limits of Artificial Intelligence

2024-07-24 · Massimo Passamonti

In this essay, I argue that explicit ethical machines, whose moral principles are inferred through a bottom-up approach, are unable to replicate human-like moral reasoning and cannot be considered moral agents. By utiliz…
