Correlation functions as a tool to study collective behaviour phenomena in biological systems

2021-07-09 · Tomás S. Grigera

Much of interesting complex biological behaviour arises from collective properties. Important information about collective behaviour lies in the time and space structure of fluctuations around average properties, and two-point correlation functions are a fundamental tool to study these fluctuations. We give a self-contained presentation of definitions and techniques for computation of correlation functions aimed at providing students and researchers outside the field of statistical physics a practical guide to calculating correlation functions from experimental and simulation data. We discuss some properties of correlations in critical systems, and the effect of finite system size, which is particularly relevant for most biological experimental systems. Finally we apply these to the case of the dynamical transition in a simple neuronal model,

2021-07-29 · Nick James, Max Menzies

This paper introduces new methods to study behaviours among the 52 largest cryptocurrencies between 01-01-2019 and 30-06-2021. First, we explore evolutionary correlation behaviours and apply a recently proposed turning p…

Cost of institutional incentives for promoting cooperation in $2\times2$ games and collective risk games

2025-06-03 · M. H. Duong, C. M. Durbac, T. A. Han

Prosocial behaviours, which appear to contradict Darwinian principles of individual payoff maximisation, have been extensively studied across multiple disciplines. Cooperation, requiring a personal cost for collective be…

On financial market correlation structures and diversification benefits across and within equity sectors

2022-02-22 · Nick James, Max Menzies, Georg A. Gottwald

We study how to assess the potential benefit of diversifying an equity portfolio by investing within and across equity sectors. We analyse 20 years of US stock price data, which includes the global financial crisis (GFC)…

Evolutionary game theory: the mathematics of evolution and collective behaviours

2023-11-24 · The Anh Han

This brief discusses evolutionary game theory as a powerful and unified mathematical tool to study evolution of collective behaviours. It summarises some of my recent research directions using evolutionary game theory me…
