(Deep) Generative Geodesics

2024-07-15 · Beomsu Kim, Michael Puthawala, Jong Chul Ye, Emanuele Sansone

In this work, we propose to study the global geometrical properties of generative models. We introduce a new Riemannian metric to assess the similarity between any two data points. Importantly, our metric is agnostic to the parametrization of the generative model and requires only the evaluation of its data likelihood. Moreover, the metric leads to the conceptual definition of generative distances and generative geodesics, whose computation can be done efficiently in the data space. Their approximations are proven to converge to their true values under mild conditions. We showcase three proof-of-concept applications of this global metric, including clustering, data visualization, and data interpolation, thus providing new tools to support the geometrical understanding of generative models.

Feature-Based Interpolation and Geodesics in the Latent Spaces of Generative Models

2019-04-06 · Łukasz Struski, Michał Sadowski, Tomasz Danel, Jacek Tabor 외

Interpolating between points is a problem connected simultaneously with finding geodesics and study of generative models. In the case of geodesics, we search for the curves with the shortest length, while in the case of …

Identifying latent distances with Finslerian geometry

Riemannian geometry provides us with powerful tools to explore the latent space of generative models while preserving the underlying structure of the data. The latent space can be equipped it with a Riemannian metric, pu…

A Likely Geometry of Generative Models

2025-10-30 · Frederik Möbius Rygaard, Shen Zhu, Yinzhu Jin, Søren Hauberg 외 arxiv

The geometry of generative models serves as the basis for interpolation, model inspection, and more. Unfortunately, most generative models lack a principal notion of geometry without restrictive assumptions on either the…

Follow the Energy, Find the Path: Riemannian Metrics from Energy-Based Models

What is the shortest path between two data points lying in a high-dimensional space? While the answer is trivial in Euclidean geometry, it becomes significantly more complex when the data lies on a curved manifold -- req…

Geodesics in the Deep Linear Network

We derive a general system of ODEs and associated explicit solutions in a special case for geodesics between full rank matrices in the deep linear network geometry. In the process, we find horizontal straight lines in th…
