Definite Non-Ancestral Relations and Structure Learning

2021-05-20 · Wenyu Chen, Mathias Drton, Ali Shojaie

In causal graphical models based on directed acyclic graphs (DAGs), directed paths represent causal pathways between the corresponding variables. The variable at the beginning of such a path is referred to as an ancestor of the variable at the end of the path. Ancestral relations between variables play an important role in causal modeling. In existing literature on structure learning, these relations are usually deduced from learned structures and used for orienting edges or formulating constraints of the space of possible DAGs. However, they are usually not posed as immediate target of inference. In this work we investigate the graphical characterization of ancestral relations via CPDAGs and d-separation relations. We propose a framework that can learn definite non-ancestral relations without first learning the skeleton. This frame-work yields structural information that can be used in both score- and constraint-based algorithms to learn causal DAGs more efficiently.

Bayesian network structure learning with causal effects in the presence of latent variables

2020-05-29 · Kiattikun Chobtham, Anthony C. Constantinou

Latent variables may lead to spurious relationships that can be misinterpreted as causal relationships. In Bayesian Networks (BNs), this challenge is known as learning under causal insufficiency. Structure learning algor…

A lattice structure for ancestral configurations arising from the relationship between gene trees and species trees

2021-11-19 · Egor Lappo, Noah A. Rosenberg

To a given gene tree topology $G$ and species tree topology $S$ with leaves labeled bijectively from a fixed set $X$, one can associate a set of ancestral configurations, each of which encodes a set of gene lineages that…

Addressing pitfalls in implicit unobserved confounding synthesis using explicit block hierarchical ancestral sampling

2025-03-12 · Xudong Sun, Alex Markham, Pratik Misra, Carsten Marr

Unbiased data synthesis is crucial for evaluating causal discovery algorithms in the presence of unobserved confounding, given the scarcity of real-world datasets. A common approach, implicit parameterization, encodes un…

Local Causal Discovery with Background Knowledge

2024-08-15 · Qingyuan Zheng, Yue Liu, Yangbo He

Causality plays a pivotal role in various fields of study. Based on the framework of causal graphical models, previous works have proposed identifying whether a variable is a cause or non-cause of a target in every Marko…

An Algorithm to Learn Polytree Networks with Hidden Nodes

2019-12-01 · NeurIPS 2019 12 · Firoozeh Sepehr, Donatello Materassi

Ancestral graphs are a prevalent mathematical tool to take into account latent (hidden) variables in a probabilistic graphical model. In ancestral graph representations, the nodes are only the observed (manifest) variabl…
