Detecting corruption in single-bidder auctions via positive-unlabelled learning

2021-02-10 · Natalya Goryunova, Artem Baklanov, Egor Ianovski

In research and policy-making guidelines, the single-bidder rate is a commonly used proxy of corruption in public procurement used but ipso facto this is not evidence of a corrupt auction, but an uncompetitive auction. And while an uncompetitive auction could arise due to a corrupt procurer attempting to conceal the transaction, but it could also be a result of geographic isolation, monopolist presence, or other structural factors. In this paper we use positive-unlabelled classification to attempt to separate public procurement auctions in the Russian Federation into auctions that are probably fair, and those that are suspicious.

Inference in Auctions with Many Bidders Using Transaction Prices

2023-11-16 · Federico A. Bugni, Yulong Wang

This paper studies inference in first- and second-price sealed-bid auctions with many bidders, using an asymptotic framework where the number of bidders increases while the number of auctions remains fixed. Relevant appl…

Learning to Coordinate Bidders in Non-Truthful Auctions

2025-07-03 · Hu Fu, Tao Lin arxiv

In non-truthful auctions such as first-price and all-pay auctions, the independent strategic behaviors of bidders, with the corresponding Bayes-Nash equilibrium notion, are notoriously difficult to characterize and can c…

Shill-Proof Auctions

2024-03-30 · Andrew Komo, Scott Duke Kominers, Tim Roughgarden

In an auction, a seller may masquerade as one or more bidders in order to manipulate the clearing price. We characterize single-item auction formats that are shill-proof in the sense that a profit-maximizing seller has n…

Approximately Optimal Auctions With a Strong Bidder

2024-09-17 · Luca Anderlini, GaOn Kim

We consider auctions with N+1 bidders. Of these, N are symmetric and N+1 is "sufficiently strong" relative to the others. The auction is a "tournament" in which the first N players bid to win the right to compete with N+…

GemNet: Menu-Based, Strategy-Proof Multi-Bidder Auctions Through Deep Learning

2024-06-11 · Tonghan Wang, Yanchen Jiang, David C. Parkes

Automated mechanism design (AMD) uses computational methods for mechanism design. Differentiable economics is a form of AMD that uses deep learning to learn mechanism designs and has enabled strong progress in AMD in rec…
