Discovering Causal Signals in Images

2016-05-26 · CVPR 2017 7 · David Lopez-Paz, Robert Nishihara, Soumith Chintala, Bernhard Schölkopf, Léon Bottou

This paper establishes the existence of observable footprints that reveal the "causal dispositions" of the object categories appearing in collections of images. We achieve this goal in two steps. First, we take a learning approach to observational causal discovery, and build a classifier that achieves state-of-the-art performance on finding the causal direction between pairs of random variables, given samples from their joint distribution. Second, we use our causal direction classifier to effectively distinguish between features of objects and features of their contexts in collections of static images. Our experiments demonstrate the existence of a relation between the direction of causality and the difference between objects and their contexts, and by the same token, the existence of observable signals that reveal the causal dispositions of objects.

Using Noisy Extractions to Discover Causal Knowledge

2017-11-16 · Dhanya Sridhar, Jay Pujara, Lise Getoor

Knowledge bases (KB) constructed through information extraction from text play an important role in query answering and reasoning. In this work, we study a particular reasoning task, the problem of discovering causal rel…

Causal Compression

We propose a new method of discovering causal relationships in temporal data based on the notion of causal compression. To this end, we adopt the Pearlian graph setting and the directed information as an information theo…

MOCHA: Discovering Multi-Order Dynamic Causality in Temporal Point Processes

2025-08-26 · Yunyang Cao, Juekai Lin, Wenhao Li, Bo Jin arxiv

Discovering complex causal dependencies in temporal point processes (TPPs) is critical for modeling real-world event sequences. Existing methods typically rely on static or first-order causal structures, overlooking the …

Discovering Agents

2022-08-17 · Zachary Kenton, Ramana Kumar, Sebastian Farquhar, Jonathan Richens 외

Causal models of agents have been used to analyse the safety aspects of machine learning systems. But identifying agents is non-trivial -- often the causal model is just assumed by the modeler without much justification …

Deep Koopman operator framework for causal discovery in nonlinear dynamical systems

We use a deep Koopman operator-theoretic formalism to develop a novel causal discovery algorithm, Kausal. Causal discovery aims to identify cause-effect mechanisms for better scientific understanding, explainable decisio…
