EmergentTTS-Eval: Evaluating TTS Models on Complex Prosodic, Expressiveness, and Linguistic Challenges Using Model-as-a-Judge

2025-05-29 · Ruskin Raj Manku, Yuzhi Tang, Xingjian Shi, Mu Li, Alex Smola

Text-to-Speech (TTS) benchmarks often fail to capture how well models handle nuanced and semantically complex text. Building on $\textit{EmergentTTS}$, we introduce $\textit{EmergentTTS-Eval}$, a comprehensive benchmark covering six challenging TTS scenarios: emotions, paralinguistics, foreign words, syntactic complexity, complex pronunciation (e.g. URLs, formulas), and questions. Crucially, our framework automates both test-case generation and evaluation, making the benchmark easily extensible. Starting from a small set of human-written seed prompts, we iteratively extend them using LLMs to target specific structural, phonetic and prosodic challenges, resulting in 1,645 diverse test cases. Moreover, we employ a model-as-a-judge approach, using a Large Audio Language Model (LALM) to assess the speech across multiple dimensions such as expressed emotion, prosodic, intonational, and pronunciation accuracy. We evaluate state-of-the-art open-source and proprietary TTS systems, such as 11Labs, Deepgram, and OpenAI's 4o-mini-TTS, on EmergentTTS-Eval, demonstrating its ability to reveal fine-grained performance differences. Results show that the model-as-a-judge approach offers robust TTS assessment and a high correlation with human preferences. We open source the evaluation $\href{https://github.com/boson-ai/EmergentTTS-Eval-public}{code}$ and the $\href{https://huggingface.co/datasets/bosonai/EmergentTTS-Eval}{dataset}$.

Emotion-Aware Prosodic Phrasing for Expressive Text-to-Speech

2023-09-21 · Rui Liu, Bin Liu, Haizhou Li

Prosodic phrasing is crucial to the naturalness and intelligibility of end-to-end Text-to-Speech (TTS). There exist both linguistic and emotional prosody in natural speech. As the study of prosodic phrasing has been ling…

StoryTTS: A Highly Expressive Text-to-Speech Dataset with Rich Textual Expressiveness Annotations

2024-04-23 · Sen Liu, Yiwei Guo, Xie Chen, Kai Yu

While acoustic expressiveness has long been studied in expressive text-to-speech (ETTS), the inherent expressiveness in text lacks sufficient attention, especially for ETTS of artistic works. In this paper, we introduce …

HuLA: Prosody-Aware Anti-Spoofing with Multi-Task Learning for Expressive and Emotional Synthetic Speech

2025-09-25 · Aurosweta Mahapatra, Ismail Rasim Ulgen, Berrak Sisman arxiv

Current anti-spoofing systems remain vulnerable to expressive and emotional synthetic speech, since they rarely leverage prosody as a discriminative cue. Prosody is central to human expressiveness and emotion, and humans…

SpeechRole: A Large-Scale Dataset and Benchmark for Evaluating Speech Role-Playing Agents

2025-08-04 · Changhao Jiang, Jiajun Sun, Yifei Cao, Jiabao Zhuang 외 arxiv

Speech is essential for realistic role-playing, yet existing work on role-playing agents largely centers on text, leaving Speech Role-Playing Agents (SRPAs) underexplored and without systematic evaluation. We introduce S…

Integrating Disfluency-based and Prosodic Features with Acoustics in Automatic Fluency Evaluation of Spontaneous Speech

2020-05-01 · LREC 2020 5 · Huaijin Deng, Youchao Lin, Takehito Utsuro, Akio Kobayashi 외

This paper describes an automatic fluency evaluation of spontaneous speech. In the task of automatic fluency evaluation, we integrate diverse features of acoustics, prosody, and disfluency-based ones. Then, we attempt to…
