Entropy and the Kullback-Leibler Divergence for Bayesian Networks: Computational Complexity and Efficient Implementation

2023-11-29 · Marco Scutari

Bayesian networks (BNs) are a foundational model in machine learning and causal inference. Their graphical structure can handle high-dimensional problems, divide them into a sparse collection of smaller ones, underlies Judea Pearl's causality, and determines their explainability and interpretability. Despite their popularity, there are almost no resources in the literature on how to compute Shannon's entropy and the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence for BNs under their most common distributional assumptions. In this paper, we provide computationally efficient algorithms for both by leveraging BNs' graphical structure, and we illustrate them with a complete set of numerical examples. In the process, we show it is possible to reduce the computational complexity of KL from cubic to quadratic for Gaussian BNs.

Guaranteed bounds on the Kullback-Leibler divergence of univariate mixtures using piecewise log-sum-exp inequalities

2016-06-19 · Frank Nielsen, Ke Sun

Information-theoretic measures such as the entropy, cross-entropy and the Kullback-Leibler divergence between two mixture models is a core primitive in many signal processing tasks. Since the Kullback-Leibler divergence …

Rényi Divergence and Kullback-Leibler Divergence

2012-06-12 · Tim van Erven, Peter Harremoës

R\'enyi divergence is related to R\'enyi entropy much like Kullback-Leibler divergence is related to Shannon's entropy, and comes up in many settings. It was introduced by R\'enyi as a measure of information that satisfi…

A Note on the Kullback-Leibler Divergence for the von Mises-Fisher distribution

2015-02-25 · Tom Diethe

We present a derivation of the Kullback Leibler (KL)-Divergence (also known as Relative Entropy) for the von Mises Fisher (VMF) Distribution in $d$-dimensions.

Information Geometry and Classical Cramér-Rao Type Inequalities

2021-04-02 · Kumar Vijay Mishra, M. Ashok Kumar

We examine the role of information geometry in the context of classical Cram\'er-Rao (CR) type inequalities. In particular, we focus on Eguchi's theory of obtaining dualistic geometric structures from a divergence functi…

Variational Characterizations of Local Entropy and Heat Regularization in Deep Learning

2019-01-29 · Nicolas Garcia Trillos, Zach Kaplan, Daniel Sanz-Alonso

The aim of this paper is to provide new theoretical and computational understanding on two loss regularizations employed in deep learning, known as local entropy and heat regularization. For both regularized losses we in…
