Estimating psychopathological networks: be careful what you wish for

2017-09-11

Network models, in which psychopathological disorders are conceptualized as a complex interplay of psychological and biological components, have become increasingly popular in the recent psychopathological literature. These network models often contain significant numbers of unknown parameters, yet the sample sizes available in psychological research are limited. As such, general assumptions about the true network are introduced to reduce the number of free parameters. Incorporating these assumptions, however, means that the resulting network will lead to reflect the particular structure assumed by the estimation method---a crucial and often ignored aspect of psychopathological networks. For example, observing a sparse structure and simultaneously assuming a sparse structure does not imply that the true model is, in fact, sparse. To illustrate this point, we discuss recent literature and show the effect of the assumption of sparsity in three simulation studies.

A Psychopathological Approach to Safety Engineering in AI and AGI

2018-05-23 · Vahid Behzadan, Arslan Munir, Roman V. Yampolskiy

The complexity of dynamics in AI techniques is already approaching that of complex adaptive systems, thus curtailing the feasibility of formal controllability and reachability analysis in the context of AI safety. It fol…

Say As You Wish: Fine-grained Control of Image Caption Generation with Abstract Scene Graphs

2020-03-01 · CVPR 2020 6 · Shizhe Chen, Qin Jin, Peng Wang, Qi Wu

Humans are able to describe image contents with coarse to fine details as they wish. However, most image captioning models are intention-agnostic which can not generate diverse descriptions according to different user in…

SwishReLU: A Unified Approach to Activation Functions for Enhanced Deep Neural Networks Performance

2024-07-11 · Jamshaid Ul Rahman, Rubiqa Zulfiqar, Asad Khan, Nimra

ReLU, a commonly used activation function in deep neural networks, is prone to the issue of "Dying ReLU". Several enhanced versions, such as ELU, SeLU, and Swish, have been introduced and are considered to be less common…

Persuading a Wishful Thinker

2020-11-27 · Victor Augias, Daniel M. A. Barreto

We study a persuasion problem in which a sender designs an information structure to induce a non-Bayesian receiver to take a particular action. The receiver, who is privately informed about his preferences, is a wishful …

Estimating the normal-inverse-Wishart distribution

2024-05-25 · Jonathan So

The normal-inverse-Wishart (NIW) distribution is commonly used as a prior distribution for the mean and covariance parameters of a multivariate normal distribution. The family of NIW distributions is also a minimal expon…
