Functional observers with linear error dynamics for discrete-time nonlinear systems, with application to fault diagnosis
This work deals with the problem of designing observers for the estimation of a single function of the states for discrete-time nonlinear systems. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of lower order functional observers with linear dynamics and linear output map are derived. The results provide a direct generalization to Luenberger's linear theory of functional observers. The design methodology is tested on a non-isothermal CSTR case study.

Functional Observers with Linear Error Dynamics for Nonlinear Systems
In this work, the problem of designing observers for estimating a single nonlinear functional of the state is formulated for general nonlinear systems. Notions of functional observer linearization are also formulated, in…
On Functional Observability of Nonlinear Systems and the Design of Functional Observers with Assignable Error Dynamics
This paper proposes a novel approach for designing functional observers for nonlinear systems, with linear error dynamics and assignable poles. Sufficient conditions for functional observability are first derived, leadin…
Contracting Nonlinear Observers: Convex Optimization and Learning from Data
A new approach to design of nonlinear observers (state estimators) is proposed. The main idea is to (i) construct a convex set of dynamical systems which are contracting observers for a particular system, and (ii) optimi…
State EstimationGPS-denied Navigation: Attitude, Position, Linear Velocity, and Gravity Estimation with Nonlinear Stochastic Observer
Successful navigation of a rigid-body traveling with six degrees of freedom (6 DoF) requires accurate estimation of attitude , position, and linear velocity. The true navigation dynamics are highly nonlinear and are mode…
PositionDistributed Time- and Event-Triggered Observers for Linear Systems: Non-Pathological Sampling and Inter-Event Dynamics
For an autonomous linear time-invariant (LTI) system, a distributed observer with time-triggered periodic observations and event-triggered communication is proposed to estimate the state of the system. It is shown that t…
