General markers of conscious visual perception and their timing

2015-08-26

The goal of the present investigation was to identify reliable markers of conscious visual perception and to characterize their onset latency and its variability. To that end many visual stimuli from different categories were presented at near-threshold contrast and contrastive analyses were carried out on 100 balanced subsets of the data. N200 and P300 were the two reliable markers of conscious perception common to all perceived stimuli and absent for all nonperceived stimuli. The estimated mean onset latency for both markers was shortly after 200 ms. However, the onset latency of both of these markers of conscious perception showed considerable variability depending on which subsets of the data were considered. Some of this variability could be attributed to noise, but it was first and foremost the amplitude fluctuation in the condition without conscious perception that explained the variability in onset latencies of the markers of conscious perception. The present results help to understand why different studies have observed different onset times for the neural correlates of conscious perception. Moreover, the consciousness markers explored here have more generality as stimulus specificity was reduced.

Quantum-like model for unconscious-conscious interaction and emotional coloring of perceptions and other conscious experiences

2021-06-06 · Andrei Khrennikov

Quantum measurement theory is applied to quantum-like modeling of coherent generation of perceptions and emotions and generally for emotional coloring of conscious experiences. In quantum theory, a system should be separ…

From Smart Sensing to Consciousness: An info-structural model of computational consciousness for non-interacting agents

2022-08-29 · Gerardo Iovane, Riccardo Emanuele Landi

This study proposes a model of computational consciousness for non-interacting agents. The phenomenon of interest was assumed as sequentially dependent on the cognitive tasks of sensation, perception, emotion, affection,…

A Mathematical Framework for Consciousness in Neural Networks

This paper presents a novel mathematical framework for bridging the explanatory gap (Levine, 1983) between consciousness and its physical correlates. Specifically, we propose that qualia correspond to singularities in th…

The Moon Illusion explained by the Projective Consciousness Model

2018-08-12

The Moon often appears larger near the perceptual horizon and smaller high in the sky though the visual angle subtended is invariant. We show how this illusion results from the optimization of a projective geometrical fr…
