Genes Preferring Non-AUG Start Codons in Bacteria

2020-08-25 · Anne Gvozdjak, Manoj P. Samanta

Here we investigate translational regulation in bacteria by analyzing the distribution of start codons in fully assembled genomes. We report 36 genes (infC, rpoC, rnpA, etc.) showing a preference for non-AUG start codons in evolutionarily diverse phyla ("non-AUG genes"). Most of the non-AUG genes are functionally associated with translation, transcription or replication. In E. coli, the percentage of essential genes among these 36 is significantly higher than among all genes. Furthermore, the functional distribution of these genes suggests that non-AUG start codons may be used to reduce gene expression during starvation conditions, possibly through translational autoregulation or IF3-mediated regulation.

An Entropy-Based Technique for Classifying Bacterial Chromosomes According to Synonymous Codon Usage

2015-10-14

We present a framework based on conditional entropy and the Dirichlet distribution for classifying chromosomes based on the degree to which they use synonymous codons uniformly or preferentially, that is, whether or not …

The Gossip Paradox: why do bacteria share genes?

2020-12-08 · Alastair Jamieson-Lane, Bernd Blasius

Bacteria, in contrast to eukaryotic cells contain two types of genes: chromosomal genes that are fixed to the cell, and plasmids that are mobile genes, easily shared to other cells. The sharing of plasmid genes between i…

Lysine-Cysteine-Serine-Tryptophan Inserted into the DNA-Binding Domain of Human Mineralocorticoid Receptor Increases Transcriptional Activation by Aldosterone

2024-05-16 · Yoshinao Katsu, Jiawen Zhang, Michael E. Baker

Due to alternative splicing in an ancestral DNA-binding domain (DBD) of the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR), humans contain two almost identical MR transcripts with either 984 amino acids (MR-984) or 988 amino acids (MR-…

An Event-Driven Approach for Studying Gene Block Evolution in Bacteria

2015-02-24

Motivation: Gene blocks are genes co-located on the chromosome. In many cases, genes blocks are conserved between bacterial species, sometimes as operons, when genes are co-transcribed. The conservation is rarely absolut…

Polysomally Protected Viruses

2021-01-30 · Michael Wilkinson, David Yllanes, Greg Huber

It is conceivable that an RNA virus could use a polysome, that is, a string of ribosomes covering the RNA strand, to protect the genetic material from degradation inside a host cell. This paper discusses how such a virus…
