Good signals gone bad: dynamic signalling with switching efforts
This paper examines signalling when the sender exerts effort and receives benefits over time. Receivers only observe a noisy public signal about the effort, which has no intrinsic value. The modelling of signalling in a dynamic context gives rise to novel equilibrium outcomes. In some equilibria, a sender with a higher cost of effort exerts strictly more effort than his low-cost counterpart. The low-cost type can compensate later for initial low effort, but this is not worthwhile for a high-cost type. The interpretation of a given signal switches endogenously over time, depending on which type the receivers expect to send it. JEL classification: D82, D83, C73. Signalling boosts the evolution of cooperation in repeated group interactions
Many biological and social systems show significant levels of collective action. Several cooperation mechanisms have been proposed, yet they have been mostly studied independently. Among these, direct reciprocity support…
Mathematical Modelling and Analysis of the Brassinosteroid and Gibberellin Signalling Pathways and their Interactions
The plant hormones brassinosteroid (BR) and gibberellin (GA) have important roles in a wide range of processes involved in plant growth and development. In this paper we derive and analyse new mathematical models for the…
Pavlovian Signalling with General Value Functions in Agent-Agent Temporal Decision Making
In this paper, we contribute a multi-faceted study into Pavlovian signalling -- a process by which learned, temporally extended predictions made by one agent inform decision-making by another agent. Signalling is intimat…
Decision Makingreinforcement-learningReinforcement Learning (RL)Analysis of Discrete-Time Switched Linear Systems under Logic Dynamic Switchings
The control properties of discrete-time switched linear systems (SLS) with switching signals generated by logical dynamic systems are studied using the semi-tensor product (STP) approach. With the algebraic state space r…
Cellular forgetting, desensitisation, stress and aging in signalling networks. When do cells refuse to learn more?
Recent findings show that single, non-neuronal cells are also able to learn signalling responses developing cellular memory. In cellular learning nodes of signalling networks strengthen their interactions e.g. by the con…
