Growth and instability of a phospholipid vesicle in a bath of fatty acids

2016-12-13

Using a microfluidic trap, we study the behavior of individual phospholipid vesicles in contact with fatty acids. We show that spontaneous fatty acids insertion inside the bilayer is controlled by the vesicle size, osmotic pressure difference across the membrane and fatty acids concentration in the external bath. Depending on these parameters, vesicles can grow spherically or become unstable and fragment into several daughter vesicles. We establish the phase diagram for vesicle growth and we derive a simple thermodynamic model that reproduces the time evolution of the vesicle volume. Finally, we show that stable growth can be achieved on an artificial cell expressing a simple set of bacterial cytoskeletal proteins, paving the way toward artificial cell reproduction.

On an RNA-membrane protogenome

2025-01-17 · Michael Yarus

Selected ribonucleotide sequences bind well to zwitterionic phospholipid bilayer membranes, though randomized RNAs do not. There are no evident repeated sequences in selected membrane binding RNAs. This implies small and…

On the Role of Vesicle Transport in Neurite Growth: Modelling and Experiments

2019-08-06 · Ina Humpert, Danila Di Meo, Andreas W. Püschel, Jan-Frederik Pietschmann

The processes that determine the establishment of the complex morphology of neurons during development are still poorly understood. We present experiments that use live imaging to examine the role of vesicle transport an…

A comparative study of the lipid panel levels at different duration time and temperature storage

Background: the stability of serum specimen during time storage is importance in clinical and medical science researches in addition of diagnosis. Lipids are organic molecules that classified into 8 classes: fatty acids,…

Temperature dependence of mycosubtilin homologue production in Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633

2020-09-22 · Patrick Fickers, Valérie Leclére, Jean-Sebastien Guez, Max Béchet 외

Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633 produces mycosubtilin, a non-ribosomally synthesized lipopeptide of the iturin family which presents antagonistic activities toward various phytopathogens. Different homologues with fatty acid …

Micron-sized domains in quasi single-component giant vesicles
