How Much Weak Overlap Can Doubly Robust T-Statistics Handle?

2025-04-17 · Jacob Dorn

In the presence of sufficiently weak overlap, it is known that no regular root-n-consistent estimators exist and standard estimators may fail to be asymptotically normal. This paper shows that a thresholded version of the standard doubly robust estimator is asymptotically normal with well-calibrated Wald confidence intervals even when constructed using nonparametric estimates of the propensity score and conditional mean outcome. The analysis implies a cost of weak overlap in terms of black-box nuisance rates, borne when the semiparametric bound is infinite, and the contribution of outcome smoothness to the outcome regression rate, which is incurred even when the semiparametric bound is finite. As a byproduct of this analysis, I show that under weak overlap, the optimal global regression rate is the same as the optimal pointwise regression rate, without the usual polylogarithmic penalty. The high-level conditions yield new rules of thumb for thresholding in practice. In simulations, thresholded AIPW can exhibit moderate overrejection in small samples, but I am unable to reject a null hypothesis of exact coverage in large samples. In an empirical application, the clipped AIPW estimator that targets the standard average treatment effect yields similar precision to a heuristic 10% fixed-trimming approach that changes the target sample.

Doubly Robust Estimators with Weak Overlap

2023-04-18 · Yukun Ma, Pedro H. C. Sant'Anna, Yuya Sasaki, Takuya Ura

In this paper, we derive a new class of doubly robust estimators for treatment effect estimands that is also robust against weak covariate overlap. Our proposed estimator relies on trimming observations with extreme prop…

Doubly Robust Functional Representation Learning for Longitudinal Causal Inference with Irregular Histories

2026-07-30 · Mengfei Ran, Yifeng Shen, Ruijie Guan arxiv

Longitudinal causal studies often record histories as irregular functional fragments: laboratory values, physiologic signals, sensor streams, and image-derived summaries measured at unequal and informative times. Standar…

Off-Policy Evaluation in Markov Decision Processes under Weak Distributional Overlap

2024-02-13 · Mohammad Mehrabi, Stefan Wager

Doubly robust methods hold considerable promise for off-policy evaluation in Markov decision processes (MDPs) under sequential ignorability: They have been shown to converge as $1/\sqrt{T}$ with the horizon $T$, to be st…

Learning to Segment using Summary Statistics and Weak Supervision

2026-05-04 · Omkar Kulkarni, Edward Raff, Tim Oates arxiv

Medical experts often manually segment images to obtain diagnostic statistics and discard the resulting annotations. We aim to train segmentation models to alleviate this burden, but constrained to the retained summary s…

Empirical bounds for functions with weak interactions

We provide sharp empirical estimates of expectation, variance and normal approximation for a class of statistics whose variation in any argument does not change too much when another argument is modified. Examples of suc…
