Hydrogen in Aviation: Evaluating the Feasibility and Benefits of a Green Fuel Alternative
Growing concerns regarding environmental health have highlighted the aviation industry's impact and potential mitigation strategies. Previous research has indicated hydrogen's significant potential for reducing the industry's environmental impact, yet implementation challenges remain. Through analysis of light aircraft and military applications, we demonstrate that hydrogen-based systems can achieve performance metrics approaching those of traditional fuels while reducing emissions by up to 74.7%. Our findings show that hydrogen's superior energy-to-mass ratio (120 MJ/kg versus 43 MJ/kg for jet fuel) makes it particularly advantageous for aviation applications compared to battery-electric alternatives. Primary implementation challenges involve cryogenic storage systems (-253{\deg}C), tank placement optimization, and fueling infrastructure development. The observed efficiency penalties of only 2.23% in military applications suggest hydrogen's viability as a sustainable aviation fuel alternative.

Little to lose: the case for a robust European green hydrogen strategy
The EU targets 10 Mt of green hydrogen production by 2030, but has not committed to targets for 2040. Green hydrogen competes with carbon capture and storage, biomass and imports in reaching emissions reductions; earlier…
Participatory Mapping of Local Green Hydrogen Cost-Potentials in Sub-Saharan Africa
Green hydrogen is a promising solution within carbon free energy systems with Sub-Saharan Africa being a possibly well-suited candidate for its production. However, green hydrogen in Sub-Saharan Africa is not yet investi…
Green Hydrogen Cost-Potentials for Global Trade
Green hydrogen is expected to be traded globally in future greenhouse gas neutral energy systems. However, there is still a lack of temporally- and spatially-explicit cost-potentials for green hydrogen considering the fu…
Role of hydrogen in decarbonizing China's electricity and hard-to-abate sectors
Green hydrogen has the potential to address two pressing problems in a zero-carbon energy system: balancing seasonal variability of solar and wind in the electricity sector, and replacing fossil fuels in hard-to-abate se…
