Icy: A benchmark for measuring compositional inductive bias of emergent communication models
We present a benchmark \textsc{Icy} for measuring the compositional inductive bias of models in the context of emergent communications. We devise corrupted compositional grammars that probe for limitations in the compositional inductive bias of frequently used models. We use these corrupted compositional grammars to compare and contrast a wide range of models. We propose a hierarchical model, HU-RNN, which might show an inductive bias towards relocatable atomic groups of tokens, thus potentially encouraging the emergence of words. We experiment with probing for the compositional inductive bias of sender networks in isolation, and also placed end-to-end, with a receiver, as an auto-encoder. We propose a metric of compositionality, Compositional Entropy, that is fast to calculate, and broadly applicable.

Neural networks can understand compositional functions that humans do not, in the context of emergent communication
We show that it is possible to craft transformations that, applied to compositional grammars, result in grammars that neural networks can learn easily, but humans do not. This could explain the disconnect between current…
Inductive BiasPositionInductive Bias and Language Expressivity in Emergent Communication
Referential games and reconstruction games are the most common game types for studying emergent languages. We investigate how the type of the language game affects the emergent language in terms of: i) language compositi…
Inductive BiasEmergence of compositional language in communication through noisy channel
In this paper, we investigate how communication through a noisy channel can lead to the emergence of compositional language. Our approach is $\mbox{end-to-end}$, allows for different inductive biases on the agents’ archi…
Developmentally motivated emergence of compositional communication via template transfer
This paper explores a novel approach to achieving emergent compositional communication in multi-agent systems. We propose a training regime implementing template transfer, the idea of carrying over learned biases across …

In order to communicate, humans flatten a complex representation of ideas and their attributes into a single word or a sentence. We investigate the impact of representation learning in artificial agents by developing gra…
