Impact of commuting on disease persistence in heterogeneous metapopulations

2015-02-20

We use a stochastic metapopulation model to study the combined effects of seasonality and spatial heterogeneity on disease persistence. We find a pronounced effect of enhanced persistence associated with strong heterogeneity, intermediate coupling strength and moderate seasonal forcing. Analytic calculations show that this effect is not related with the phase lag between epidemic bursts in different patches, but rather with the linear stability properties of the attractor that describes the steady state of the system in the large population limit.

The effects of local homogeneity assumptions in metapopulation models of infectious disease

2021-12-02 · Cameron Zachreson, Sheryl Chang, Nathan Harding, Mikhail Prokopenko

Computational models of infectious disease can be broadly categorized into two types: individual-based (Agent-based), or compartmental models. While compartmental models can be structured to separate distinct sectors of …

A New Perspective on Determining Disease Invasion and Population Persistence in Heterogeneous Environments

2024-10-11 · Poroshat Yazdanbakhsh, Mark Anderson, Zhisheng Shuai

We introduce a new quantity known as the network heterogeneity index, denoted by $\mathcal{H}$, which facilitates the investigation of disease propagation and population persistence in heterogeneous environments. Our mat…

Impact of density-dependent migration flows on epidemic outbreaks in heterogeneous metapopulations

2015-07-29

We investigate the role of migration patterns on the spread of epidemics in complex networks. We enhance the SIS-diffusion model on metapopulations to a nonlinear diffusion. Specifically, individuals move randomly over t…

SEIRD model in heterogenous populations: The role of commuting and social inequalities in the COVID-19 dynamics

2020-08-15

In this paper we analyze the effects of commuting and social inequalities for the epidemic development of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). With this aim we consider a SEIRD (susceptible, exposed, infected, recovered and…

From localized to well-mixed: How commuter interactions shape disease spread

2023-03-08 · Aaron Winn, Adam Konkol, Eleni Katifori

Interactions between commuting individuals can lead to large-scale spreading of rumors, ideas, or disease, even though the commuters have no net displacement. The emergent dynamics depend crucially on the commuting distr…
