Improved Measures of Integrated Information

2016-11-29

Although there is growing interest in measuring integrated information in computational and cognitive systems, current methods for doing so in practice are computationally unfeasible. Existing and novel integration measures are investigated and classified by various desirable properties. A simple taxonomy of Phi-measures is presented where they are each characterized by their choice of factorization method (5 options), choice of probability distributions to compare (3x4 options) and choice of measure for comparing probability distributions (7 options). When requiring the Phi-measures to satisfy a minimum of attractive properties, these hundreds of options reduce to a mere handful, some of which turn out to be identical. Useful exact and approximate formulas are derived that can be applied to real-world data from laboratory experiments without posing unreasonable computational demands.

Measuring Integrated Information: Comparison of Candidate Measures in Theory and Simulation

2018-06-25

Integrated Information Theory (IIT) is a prominent theory of consciousness that has at its centre measures that quantify the extent to which a system generates more information than the sum of its parts. While several ca…

The Global Dynamical Complexity of the Human Brain Network

2016-12-21

How much information do large brain networks integrate as a whole over the sum of their parts? Can the dynamical complexity of such networks be globally quantified in an information-theoretic way and be meaningfully coup…

Integrated Information and Metastability in Systems of Coupled Oscillators

2016-06-27

It has been shown that sets of oscillators in a modular network can exhibit a rich variety of metastable chimera states, in which synchronisation and desynchronisation coexist. Independently, under the guise of integrate…

Efficient Algorithms for Searching the Minimum Information Partition in Integrated Information Theory

2017-12-19 · Jun Kitazono, Ryota Kanai, Masafumi Oizumi

The ability to integrate information in the brain is considered to be an essential property for cognition and consciousness. Integrated Information Theory (IIT) hypothesizes that the amount of integrated information ($\P…

A unified framework for information integration based on information geometry

2015-10-15

We propose a unified theoretical framework for quantifying spatio-temporal interactions in a stochastic dynamical system based on information geometry. In the proposed framework, the degree of interactions is quantified …
