Initial Orbit Determination from Only Heading Measurements
This work introduces the problem of initial orbit determination (IOD) from only heading measurements. Such a problem occurs in practice when estimating the orbit of a spacecraft using visual odometry measurements from an optical camera. After reviewing the problem geometry, a simple solution is developed in the form of an iterative scheme on the parameters describing the orbital hodograph. Numerical results are presented for an example spacecraft in low lunar orbit. The principal intent of this brief study is to communicate the existence of a new class of IOD problem to the community and to encourage the broader study of hodographs and heading-only IOD.

Physics-informed Conditional Normalizing Flows for Angles-only Cislunar Orbit Determination
Generative Astrodynamics is advanced in this work by extending generative modelling to an orbit determination problem in the cislunar environment. The task is formulated as conditional density estimation, aiming to infer…
Density EstimationOne-Shot Initial Orbit Determination in Low-Earth Orbit
Due to the importance of satellites for society and the exponential increase in the number of objects in orbit, it is important to accurately determine the state (e.g., position and velocity) of these Resident Space Obje…

This paper presents three batch estimation methods that use noisy ground velocity and heading measurements from a vehicle executing a circular orbit (or similar large heading change maneuver) to estimate the speed and di…
Generalizing Trilateration: Approximate Maximum Likelihood Estimator for Initial Orbit Determination in Low-Earth Orbit
With the increase in the number of active satellites and space debris in orbit, the problem of initial orbit determination (IOD) becomes increasingly important, demanding a high accuracy. Over the years, different approa…
