Is It a Free Lunch for Removing Outliers during Pretraining?

2024-02-19 · Baohao Liao, Christof Monz

With the growing size of large language models, the role of quantization becomes increasingly significant. However, outliers present in weights or activations notably influence the performance of quantized models. Recently, \citet{qtransformer} introduced a novel softmax function aimed at pretraining models in an outlier-free manner, thereby enhancing their suitability for quantization. Interestingly, we observed that such an approach leads to performance degradation in full precision. Building on this insight, we enhance the method by ensuring its normalization is invariant to sequence length, a crucial factor for bridging the gap between pretraining and fine-tuning. Moreover, this improved method also facilitates successful pretraining of causal language models.

Free Lunch Enhancements for Multi-modal Crowd Counting

2025-01-01 · CVPR 2025 1 · Haoliang Meng, Xiaopeng Hong, Zhengqin Lai, Miao Shang

This paper addresses multi-modal crowd counting with a novel `free lunch' training enhancement strategy that requires no additional data, parameters, or increased inference complexity. First, we introduce a cross-mod…

Free Lunch for Optimisation under the Universal Distribution

2016-08-16 · Tom Everitt, Tor Lattimore, Marcus Hutter

Function optimisation is a major challenge in computer science. The No Free Lunch theorems state that if all functions with the same histogram are assumed to be equally probable then no algorithm outperforms any other in…

FreeInv: Free Lunch for Improving DDIM Inversion

2025-03-29 · Yuxiang Bao, Huijie Liu, Xun Gao, Huan Fu 외

Naive DDIM inversion process usually suffers from a trajectory deviation issue, i.e., the latent trajectory during reconstruction deviates from the one during inversion. To alleviate this issue, previous methods either l…

The Implications of the No-Free-Lunch Theorems for Meta-induction

2021-03-22 · David H. Wolpert

The important recent book by G. Schurz appreciates that the no-free-lunch theorems (NFL) have major implications for the problem of (meta) induction. Here I review the NFL theorems, emphasizing that they do not only conc…

FreeU: Free Lunch in Diffusion U-Net

2023-09-20 · CVPR 2024 1 · Chenyang Si, Ziqi Huang, Yuming Jiang, Ziwei Liu

In this paper, we uncover the untapped potential of diffusion U-Net, which serves as a "free lunch" that substantially improves the generation quality on the fly. We initially investigate the key contributions of the U-N…
