Lambek pregroups are Frobenius spiders in preorders

2021-05-07 · Dusko Pavlovic

"Spider" is a nickname of special Frobenius algebras, a fundamental structure from mathematics, physics, and computer science. Pregroups are a fundamental structure from linguistics. Pregroups and spiders have been used together in natural language processing: one for syntax, the other for semantics. It turns out that pregroups themselves can be characterized as pointed spiders in the category of preordered relations, where they naturally arise from grammars. The other way around, preordered spider algebras in general can be characterized as unions of pregroups. This extends the characterization of relational spider algebras as disjoint unions of groups. The compositional framework that emerged with the results suggests new ways to understand and apply the basis structures in machine learning and data analysis.

An algebraic approach to translating Japanese

2023-03-10 · Valentin Boboc

We use Lambek's pregroups and the framework of compositional distributional models of language ("DisCoCat") to study translations from Japanese to English as pairs of functors. Adding decorations to pregroups we show how…

Reasoning about Meaning in Natural Language with Compact Closed Categories and Frobenius Algebras

2014-01-23 · Dimitri Kartsaklis, Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh, Stephen Pulman, Bob Coecke

Compact closed categories have found applications in modeling quantum information protocols by Abramsky-Coecke. They also provide semantics for Lambek's pregroup algebras, applied to formalizing the grammatical structure…

Pregroup Grammars, their Syntax and Semantics

2021-09-23 · Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh

Pregroup grammars were developed in 1999 and stayed Lambek's preferred algebraic model of grammar. The set-theoretic semantics of pregroups, however, faces an ambiguity problem. In his latest book, Lambek suggests that t…

Mathematical Foundations for a Compositional Distributional Model of Meaning

2010-03-23 · Bob Coecke, Mehrnoosh Sadrzadeh, Stephen Clark

We propose a mathematical framework for a unification of the distributional theory of meaning in terms of vector space models, and a compositional theory for grammatical types, for which we rely on the algebra of Pregrou…

Lexical and Derivational Meaning in Vector-Based Models of Relativisation

2017-11-30 · Michael Moortgat, Gijs Wijnholds

Sadrzadeh et al (2013) present a compositional distributional analysis of relative clauses in English in terms of the Frobenius algebraic structure of finite dimensional vector spaces. The analysis relies on distinct typ…
