Learning the Kernel for Classification and Regression

2017-12-22 · Chen Li, Luca Venturi, Ruitu Xu

We investigate a series of learning kernel problems with polynomial combinations of base kernels, which will help us solve regression and classification problems. We also perform some numerical experiments of polynomial kernels with regression and classification tasks on different datasets.

pGMM Kernel Regression and Comparisons with Boosted Trees

2022-07-18 · Ping Li, Weijie Zhao

In this work, we demonstrate the advantage of the pGMM (``powered generalized min-max'') kernel in the context of (ridge) regression. In recent prior studies, the pGMM kernel has been extensively evaluated for classifica…

Algorithms for Learning Kernels Based on Centered Alignment

2012-03-02 · Corinna Cortes, Mehryar Mohri, Afshin Rostamizadeh

This paper presents new and effective algorithms for learning kernels. In particular, as shown by our empirical results, these algorithms consistently outperform the so-called uniform combination solution that has proven…

(Decision and regression) tree ensemble based kernels for regression and classification

2020-12-19 · Dai Feng, Richard Baumgartner

Tree based ensembles such as Breiman's random forest (RF) and Gradient Boosted Trees (GBT) can be interpreted as implicit kernel generators, where the ensuing proximity matrix represents the data-driven tree ensemble ker…

Why not to use the Gaussian kernel

2026-08-27 · Toni Karvonen, Chris J. Oates arxiv

Kernels measure similarity or correlation in tasks such as regression and classification. The Gaussian kernel, other names of which include squared exponential and radial basis function kernel, is one of the most popular…

Exact Distribution-Free Hypothesis Tests for the Regression Function of Binary Classification via Conditional Kernel Mean Embeddings

2021-03-08 · Ambrus Tamás, Balázs Csanád Csáji

In this paper we suggest two statistical hypothesis tests for the regression function of binary classification based on conditional kernel mean embeddings. The regression function is a fundamental object in classificatio…
