Linking the connectome to action: Emergent dynamics in a robotic model of C. elegans

2020-11-18 · Carlos E. Valencia Urbina, Sergio A. Cannas, Pablo M. Gleiser

We analyse the neural dynamics and its relation with the emergent behaviour of a robotic vehicle that is controlled by a neural network numerical simulation based on the nervous system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The robot interacts with the environment through a sensor, that transmits the information to sensory neurons, while motor neurons outputs are connected to wheels. This is enough to allow robot movement in complex environments, avoiding collisions with obstacles. Working with a robotic model makes it possible to keep track simultaneously of the detailed microscopic dynamics of all the neurons and also register the actions of the robot in the environment in real time. This allowed us to study the interplay between connectome and complex behaviors. We found that some basic features of the global neural dynamics and their correlation with behaviour observed in the worm appear spontaneously in the robot, suggesting they are just an emergent property of the connectome.

Whole Brain Network Dynamics of Epileptic Seizures at Single Cell Resolution

2022-12-12 · Dominic RW Burrows

Epileptic seizures are characterised by abnormal brain dynamics at multiple scales, engaging single neurons, neuronal ensembles and coarse brain regions. Key to understanding the cause of such emergent population dynamic…

Emergent Self-Attention from Astrocyte-Gated Associative Memory Dynamics

2026-04-28 · Arnau Vivet, Alex Arenas arxiv

We introduce a Hopfield-type associative memory in which effective connectivity is multiplicatively modulated by astrocytic gains evolving under an entropy-regularized replicator equation. The coupled neuron-astrocyte dy…

Neuron-based Multifractal Analysis of Neuron Interaction Dynamics in Large Models

2024-02-14 · Xiongye Xiao, Chenyu Zhou, Heng Ping, Defu Cao 외

In recent years, there has been increasing attention on the capabilities of large models, particularly in handling complex tasks that small-scale models are unable to perform. Notably, large language models (LLMs) have d…

Brain volume predicts survival of colliding-spreading messages on mammal brain networks

2025-05-21 · Yan Hao, Tate Tower, Hannah Lax, Marc-Thorsten Hütt 외

White matter in mammal brains forms a densely interconnected communication network. Due to high edge density, along with continuous generation and spread of messages, brain networks must contend with congestion, which ma…

AERoS: Assurance of Emergent Behaviour in Autonomous Robotic Swarms

2023-02-20 · Dhaminda B. Abeywickrama, James Wilson, Suet Lee, Greg Chance 외

The behaviours of a swarm are not explicitly engineered. Instead, they are an emergent consequence of the interactions of individual agents with each other and their environment. This emergent functionality poses a chall…
