LISTEN to Your Preferences: An LLM Framework for Multi-Objective Selection

2025-10-29 · Adam S. Jovine, Tinghan Ye, Francis Bahk, Jingjing Wang, Matthew Ford, David B. Shmoys, Peter I. Frazier arxiv

Human experts often struggle to select the best option from a large set of items with multiple competing objectives, a process bottlenecked by the difficulty of formalizing complex, implicit preferences. To address this, we introduce LISTEN (LLM-based Iterative Selection with Trade-off Evaluation from Natural-language), an agentic LLM-based framework that treats the LLM as a decision-making agent capable of iteratively refining its internal preference model and taking actions (e.g., proposing utilities or selecting candidates) to maximize alignment with a user's implicit goals. To operate within LLM constraints like context windows and inference costs, we propose two iterative algorithms: LISTEN-U, which uses the LLM to refine a parametric utility function, and LISTEN-T, a non-parametric method that performs tournament-style selections over small batches of solutions. Evaluated on diverse tasks including flight booking, shopping, and exam scheduling, our results show LISTEN-U excels when preferences are parametrically aligned (a property we measure with a novel concordance metric), while LISTEN-T offers more robust performance overall. This work explores a promising direction for steering complex multi-objective decisions directly with natural language, reducing the cognitive burden of traditional preference elicitation. Calibrate your listeners! Robust communication-based training for pragmatic speakers

2021-10-11 · Findings (EMNLP) 2021 11 · Rose E. Wang, Julia White, Jesse Mu, Noah D. Goodman

To be good conversational partners, natural language processing (NLP) systems should be trained to produce contextually useful utterances. Prior work has investigated training NLP systems with communication-based objecti…

An Exploration of ECAPA-TDNN and x-vector Speaker Representations in Zero-shot Multi-speaker TTS

2025-06-25 · Marie Kunešová, Zdeněk Hanzlíček, Jindřich Matoušek

Zero-shot multi-speaker text-to-speech (TTS) systems rely on speaker embeddings to synthesize speech in the voice of an unseen speaker, using only a short reference utterance. While many speaker embeddings have been deve…

Listener Modeling and Context-aware Music Recommendation Based on Country Archetypes

2020-09-11 · Markus Schedl, Christine Bauer, Wolfgang Reisinger, Dominik Kowald 외

Music preferences are strongly shaped by the cultural and socio-economic background of the listener, which is reflected, to a considerable extent, in country-specific music listening profiles. Previous work has already i…

Listener-Rewarded Thinking in VLMs for Image Preferences

2025-06-28 · Alexander Gambashidze, Li Pengyi, Matvey Skripkin, Andrey Galichin 외

Training robust and generalizable reward models for human visual preferences is essential for aligning text-to-image and text-to-video generative models with human intent. However, current reward models often fail to gen…
