Local Independence Testing for Point Processes

2021-10-25 · Nikolaj Thams, Niels Richard Hansen

Constraint based causal structure learning for point processes require empirical tests of local independence. Existing tests require strong model assumptions, e.g. that the true data generating model is a Hawkes process with no latent confounders. Even when restricting attention to Hawkes processes, latent confounders are a major technical difficulty because a marginalized process will generally not be a Hawkes process itself. We introduce an expansion similar to Volterra expansions as a tool to represent marginalized intensities. Our main theoretical result is that such expansions can approximate the true marginalized intensity arbitrarily well. Based on this we propose a test of local independence and investigate its properties in real and simulated data.

Conditional Local Independence Testing with Application to Dynamic Causal Discovery

2025-06-09 · Mingzhou Liu, Xinwei Sun, Yizhou Wang

In this note, we extend the conditional local independence testing theory developed in Christgau et al. (2024) to Ito processes. The result can be applied to causal discovery in dynamic systems.

Nonparametric Conditional Local Independence Testing

2022-03-25 · Alexander Mangulad Christgau, Lasse Petersen, Niels Richard Hansen

Conditional local independence is an asymmetric independence relation among continuous time stochastic processes. It describes whether the evolution of one process is directly influenced by another process given the hist…

A Kernel Independence Test for Random Processes

2014-02-18 · Kacper Chwialkowski, Arthur Gretton

A new non parametric approach to the problem of testing the independence of two random process is developed. The test statistic is the Hilbert Schmidt Independence Criterion (HSIC), which was used previously in testing i…

Fast Nonparametric Conditional Independence Testing via Two-Stage Regression
