Localized, High-resolution Geographic Representations with Slepian Functions

2026-01-30 · Arjun Rao, Ruth Crasto, Tessa Ooms, David Rolnick, Konstantin Klemmer, Marc Rußwurm arxiv

Geographic data is fundamentally local. Disease outbreaks cluster in population centers, ecological patterns emerge along coastlines, and economic activity concentrates within country borders. Machine learning models that encode geographic location, however, distribute representational capacity uniformly across the globe, struggling at the fine-grained resolutions that localized applications require. We propose a geographic location encoder built from spherical Slepian functions that concentrate representational capacity inside a region-of-interest and scale to high resolutions without extensive computational demands. For settings requiring global context, we present a hybrid Slepian-Spherical Harmonic encoder that efficiently bridges the tradeoff between local-global performance, while retaining desirable properties such as pole-safety and spherical-surface-distance preservation. Across five tasks spanning classification, regression, and image-augmented prediction, Slepian encodings outperform baselines and retain performance advantages across a wide range of neural network architectures.

Topological Slepians: Maximally Localized Representations of Signals over Simplicial Complexes

2022-10-26 · Claudio Battiloro, Paolo Di Lorenzo, Sergio Barbarossa

This paper introduces topological Slepians, i.e., a novel class of signals defined over topological spaces (e.g., simplicial complexes) that are maximally concentrated on the topological domain (e.g., over a set of nodes…

Spatial-Slepian Transform on the Sphere

2020-10-14 · Adeem Aslam, Zubair Khalid

We present spatial-Slepian transform~(SST) for the representation of signals on the sphere to support localized signal analysis. We use well-optimally concentrated Slepian functions, obtained by solving the Slepian spati…

When Slepian Meets Fiedler: Putting a Focus on the Graph Spectrum

2017-01-29 · Dimitri Van De Ville, Robin Demesmaeker, Maria Giulia Preti

The study of complex systems benefits from graph models and their analysis. In particular, the eigendecomposition of the graph Laplacian lets emerge properties of global organization from local interactions; e.g., the Fi…

Facial Expression Classification Using Rotation Slepian-based Moment Invariants

2016-06-28 · Cuiming Zou, Kit Ian Kou

Rotation moment invariants have been of great interest in image processing and pattern recognition. This paper presents a novel kind of rotation moment invariants based on the Slepian functions, which were originally int…
