Machine Assisted Analysis of Vowel Length Contrasts in Wolof

2017-06-01 · Elodie Gauthier, Laurent Besacier, Sylvie Voisin

Growing digital archives and improving algorithms for automatic analysis of text and speech create new research opportunities for fundamental research in phonetics. Such empirical approaches allow statistical evaluation of a much larger set of hypothesis about phonetic variation and its conditioning factors (among them geographical / dialectal variants). This paper illustrates this vision and proposes to challenge automatic methods for the analysis of a not easily observable phenomenon: vowel length contrast. We focus on Wolof, an under-resourced language from Sub-Saharan Africa. In particular, we propose multiple features to make a fine evaluation of the degree of length contrast under different factors such as: read vs semi spontaneous speech ; standard vs dialectal Wolof. Our measures made fully automatically on more than 20k vowel tokens show that our proposed features can highlight different degrees of contrast for each vowel considered. We notably show that contrast is weaker in semi-spontaneous speech and in a non standard semi-spontaneous dialect.

A knowledge-driven vowel-based approach of depression classification from speech using data augmentation

2022-10-27 · Kexin Feng, Theodora Chaspari

We propose a novel explainable machine learning (ML) model that identifies depression from speech, by modeling the temporal dependencies across utterances and utilizing the spectrotemporal information at the vowel level.…

Towards a Phonology-Informed Evaluation of Multilingual TTS

2026-07-02 · Sneha Ray Barman, Neeraj Kumar Sharma, Shakuntala Mahanta arxiv

Neural TTS systems can sound natural across languages, but naturalness does not guarantee the preservation of sound contrasts that distinguish words from their grammatical forms. Standard metrics like MOS do not test for…

Automatic measurement of vowel duration via structured prediction

2016-10-26 · Yossi Adi, Joseph Keshet, Emily Cibelli, Erin Gustafson 외

A key barrier to making phonetic studies scalable and replicable is the need to rely on subjective, manual annotation. To help meet this challenge, a machine learning algorithm was developed for automatic measurement of …

Covertly improving intelligibility with data-driven adaptations of speech timing

2026-03-31 · Paige Tuttösí, Angelica Lim, H. Henny Yeung, Yue Wang 외 arxiv

Human talkers often address listeners with language-comprehension challenges, such as hard-of-hearing or non-native adults, by globally slowing down their speech. However, it remains unclear whether this strategy actuall…

Visualising Model Training via Vowel Space for Text-To-Speech Systems

2022-08-21 · Binu Abeysinghe, Jesin James, Catherine I. Watson, Felix Marattukalam

With the recent developments in speech synthesis via machine learning, this study explores incorporating linguistics knowledge to visualise and evaluate synthetic speech model training. If changes to the first and second…
