Nonparametric independence testing via mutual information

2017-11-17 · Thomas B. Berrett, Richard J. Samworth

We propose a test of independence of two multivariate random vectors, given a sample from the underlying population. Our approach, which we call MINT, is based on the estimation of mutual information, whose decomposition into joint and marginal entropies facilitates the use of recently-developed efficient entropy estimators derived from nearest neighbour distances. The proposed critical values, which may be obtained from simulation (in the case where one marginal is known) or resampling, guarantee that the test has nominal size, and we provide local power analyses, uniformly over classes of densities whose mutual information satisfies a lower bound. Our ideas may be extended to provide a new goodness-of-fit tests of normal linear models based on assessing the independence of our vector of covariates and an appropriately-defined notion of an error vector. The theory is supported by numerical studies on both simulated and real data.

Nonparametric Independence Testing for Small Sample Sizes

2014-06-07 · Aaditya Ramdas, Leila Wehbe

This paper deals with the problem of nonparametric independence testing, a fundamental decision-theoretic problem that asks if two arbitrary (possibly multivariate) random variables $X,Y$ are independent or not, a questi…

Data-Driven Representations for Testing Independence: Modeling, Analysis and Connection with Mutual Information Estimation

2021-10-27 · Mauricio E. Gonzalez, Jorge F. Silva, Miguel Videla, Marcos E. Orchard

This work addresses testing the independence of two continuous and finite-dimensional random variables from the design of a data-driven partition. The empirical log-likelihood statistic is adopted to approximate the suff…

Fast Nonparametric Conditional Independence Testing via Two-Stage Regression

2026-06-16 · Eric V. Strobl arxiv

Constraint-based causal discovery relies on repeated conditional independence tests, but fast nonparametric tests often sacrifice calibration, especially when variables depend on the conditioning set through nonlinear re…

Optimal structure learning and conditional independence testing

2025-07-08 · Ming Gao, Yuhao Wang, Bryon Aragam arxiv

We establish a fundamental connection between optimal structure learning and optimal conditional independence testing by showing that the minimax optimal rate for structure learning problems is determined by the minimax …

Practical Kernel Tests of Conditional Independence

2024-02-20 · Roman Pogodin, Antonin Schrab, Yazhe Li, Danica J. Sutherland 외

We describe a data-efficient, kernel-based approach to statistical testing of conditional independence. A major challenge of conditional independence testing, absent in tests of unconditional independence, is to obtain t…
