On a fundamental statistical edge principle

2024-04-22 · Tommaso Gastaldi

This paper establishes that conditioning the probability of execution of new orders on the self-generated historical trading information (HTI) of a trading strategy is a necessary condition for a statistical trading edge. It is shown, in particular, that, given any trading strategy S that does not use its own HTI, it is always possible to construct a new strategy S* that yields a systematically increasing improvement over S in terms of profit and loss (PnL) by using the self-generated HTI. This holds true under rather general conditions that are frequently met in practice, and it is proven through a decision mechanism specifically designed to formally prove this idea. Simulations and real-world trading evidence are included for validation and illustration, respectively.

Uncertainty Principles in Risk-Aware Statistical Estimation

2021-04-29 · Nikolas P. Koumpis, Dionysios S. Kalogerias

We present a new uncertainty principle for risk-aware statistical estimation, effectively quantifying the inherent trade-off between mean squared error ($\mse$) and risk, the latter measured by the associated average pre…

Falsifying Causal Graphs With Outlier Events

2026-07-13 · William Roy Orchard, Philipp M. Faller, Dominik Janzing arxiv

True causal relationships are rarely known, and inferring causal graphs from data is hard. A fundamental challenge is how to assess whether a given causal graph is good in the absence of a ground truth. We propose falsif…

Statistical Foundation Behind Machine Learning and Its Impact on Computer Vision

2022-09-06 · Lei Zhang, Heung-Yeung Shum

This paper revisits the principle of uniform convergence in statistical learning, discusses how it acts as the foundation behind machine learning, and attempts to gain a better understanding of the essential problem that…

Veridical Data Science for Medical Foundation Models

2024-09-15 · Ahmed Alaa, Bin Yu

The advent of foundation models (FMs) such as large language models (LLMs) has led to a cultural shift in data science, both in medicine and beyond. This shift involves moving away from specialized predictive models trai…

Inference of hyperedges and overlapping communities in hypergraphs

2022-04-12 · Martina Contisciani, Federico Battiston, Caterina De Bacco

Hypergraphs, encoding structured interactions among any number of system units, have recently proven a successful tool to describe many real-world biological and social networks. Here we propose a framework based on stat…
