On conditional versus marginal bias in multi-armed bandits

2020-02-19 · ICML 2020 1 · Jaehyeok Shin, Aaditya Ramdas, Alessandro Rinaldo

The bias of the sample means of the arms in multi-armed bandits is an important issue in adaptive data analysis that has recently received considerable attention in the literature. Existing results relate in precise ways the sign and magnitude of the bias to various sources of data adaptivity, but do not apply to the conditional inference setting in which the sample means are computed only if some specific conditions are satisfied. In this paper, we characterize the sign of the conditional bias of monotone functions of the rewards, including the sample mean. Our results hold for arbitrary conditioning events and leverage natural monotonicity properties of the data collection policy. We further demonstrate, through several examples from sequential testing and best arm identification, that the sign of the conditional and marginal bias of the sample mean of an arm can be different, depending on the conditioning event. Our analysis offers new and interesting perspectives on the subtleties of assessing the bias in data adaptive settings.

Marginal and Conditional Importance Measures from Machine Learning Models and Their Relationship with Conditional Average Treatment Effect

2025-01-28 · Mohammad Kaviul Anam Khan, Olli Saarela, Rafal Kustra

Interpreting black-box machine learning models is challenging due to their strong dependence on data and inherently non-parametric nature. This paper reintroduces the concept of importance through "Marginal Variable Impo…

The erasure of intensive livestock farming in text-to-image generative AI

2025-02-27 · Kehan Sheng, Frank A. M. Tuyttens, Marina A. G. von Keyserlingk

Generative AI (e.g., ChatGPT) is increasingly integrated into people's daily lives. While it is known that AI perpetuates biases against marginalized human groups, their impact on non-human animals remains understudied. …

Out of Sight Out of Mind, Out of Sight Out of Mind: Measuring Bias in Language Models Against Overlooked Marginalized Groups in Regional Contexts

2025-04-17 · Fatma Elsafoury, David Hartmann

We know that language models (LMs) form biases and stereotypes of minorities, leading to unfair treatments of members of these groups, thanks to research mainly in the US and the broader English-speaking world. As the ne…

Entropy Across the Bridge: Conditional-Marginal Discretization for Flow and Schrödinger Samplers

2026-05-15 · Bruno Trentini, Dejan Stancevic, Michael M. Bronstein, Alexander Tong 외 arxiv

For a fixed flow-based generative model under a small inference budget, sample quality can depend strongly on where the sampler spends its few function evaluations. Flow matching and Schrödinger bridges define probabilit…

Beyond Marginal Validity: Finite-Sample Guarantees for Localized Conformal Prediction

2026-08-06 · Anton Conrad, Rustam Isaev, Denis Belomestny, Eric Moulines 외 arxiv

Conformal prediction endows arbitrary black-box predictors with finite-sample, distribution-free marginal coverage, yet marginal validity can hide severe covariate-specific miscalibration, while exact distribution-free c…
