On Heterogeneous Treatment Effects in Heterogeneous Causal Graphs

2023-01-29 · Richard A Watson, Hengrui Cai, Xinming An, Samuel McLean, Rui Song

Heterogeneity and comorbidity are two interwoven challenges associated with various healthcare problems that greatly hampered research on developing effective treatment and understanding of the underlying neurobiological mechanism. Very few studies have been conducted to investigate heterogeneous causal effects (HCEs) in graphical contexts due to the lack of statistical methods. To characterize this heterogeneity, we first conceptualize heterogeneous causal graphs (HCGs) by generalizing the causal graphical model with confounder-based interactions and multiple mediators. Such confounders with an interaction with the treatment are known as moderators. This allows us to flexibly produce HCGs given different moderators and explicitly characterize HCEs from the treatment or potential mediators on the outcome. We establish the theoretical forms of HCEs and derive their properties at the individual level in both linear and nonlinear models. An interactive structural learning is developed to estimate the complex HCGs and HCEs with confidence intervals provided. Our method is empirically justified by extensive simulations and its practical usefulness is illustrated by exploring causality among psychiatric disorders for trauma survivors.

Heterogeneous Treatment Effects and Causal Mechanisms

2024-04-02 · Jiawei Fu, Tara Slough

The credibility revolution advances the use of research designs that permit identification and estimation of causal effects. However, understanding which mechanisms produce measured causal effects remains a challenge. A …

Estimating heterogeneous treatment effects with right-censored data via causal survival forests

2020-01-27 · Yifan Cui, Michael R. Kosorok, Erik Sverdrup, Stefan Wager 외

Forest-based methods have recently gained in popularity for non-parametric treatment effect estimation. Building on this line of work, we introduce causal survival forests, which can be used to estimate heterogeneous tre…

Identification and Estimation of Conditional Average Partial Causal Effects via Instrumental Variable

2024-01-20 · Yuta Kawakami, manabu kuroki, Jin Tian

There has been considerable recent interest in estimating heterogeneous causal effects. In this paper, we study conditional average partial causal effects (CAPCE) to reveal the heterogeneity of causal effects with contin…

Direct Bayesian Additive Regression Trees for Conditional Average Treatment Effects in Regression Discontinuity Designs

2026-03-04 · Daisuke Kondo, Shonosuke Sugasawa arxiv

Regression discontinuity designs (RDD) are widely used for causal inference. In many empirical applications, treatment effects vary substantially with covariates, and ignoring such heterogeneity can lead to misleading co…

Data-Driven Estimation of Heterogeneous Treatment Effects

2023-01-16 · Christopher Tran, Keith Burghardt, Kristina Lerman, Elena Zheleva

Estimating how a treatment affects different individuals, known as heterogeneous treatment effect estimation, is an important problem in empirical sciences. In the last few years, there has been a considerable interest i…
