Performative Prediction: Past and Future

2023-10-25 · Moritz Hardt, Celestine Mendler-Dünner

Predictions in the social world generally influence the target of prediction, a phenomenon known as performativity. Self-fulfilling and self-negating predictions are examples of performativity. Of fundamental importance to economics, finance, and the social sciences, the notion has been absent from the development of machine learning that builds on the static perspective of pattern recognition. In machine learning applications, however, performativity often surfaces as distribution shift. A predictive model deployed on a digital platform, for example, influences behavior and thereby changes the data-generating distribution. We discuss the recently founded area of performative prediction that provides a definition and conceptual framework to study performativity in machine learning. A key element of performative prediction is a natural equilibrium notion that gives rise to new optimization challenges. What emerges is a distinction between learning and steering, two mechanisms at play in performative prediction. Steering is in turn intimately related to questions of power in digital markets. The notion of performative power that we review gives an answer to the question how much a platform can steer participants through its predictions. We end on a discussion of future directions, such as the role that performativity plays in contesting algorithmic systems.

Performative Prediction

2020-02-16 · ICML 2020 1 · Juan C. Perdomo, Tijana Zrnic, Celestine Mendler-Dünner, Moritz Hardt

When predictions support decisions they may influence the outcome they aim to predict. We call such predictions performative; the prediction influences the target. Performativity is a well-studied phenomenon in policy-ma…

Outside the Echo Chamber: Optimizing the Performative Risk

2021-02-17 · John Miller, Juan C. Perdomo, Tijana Zrnic

In performative prediction, predictions guide decision-making and hence can influence the distribution of future data. To date, work on performative prediction has focused on finding performatively stable models, which a…

Dissecting Performative Prediction: A Comprehensive Survey

2026-02-10 · Thomas Kehrenberg, Javier Sanguino, Jose A. Lozano, Novi Quadrianto arxiv

The field of performative prediction had its beginnings in 2020 with the seminal paper "Performative Prediction" by Perdomo et al., which established a novel machine learning setup where the deployment of a predictive mo…

Making Decisions under Outcome Performativity

2022-10-04 · Michael P. Kim, Juan C. Perdomo

Decision-makers often act in response to data-driven predictions, with the goal of achieving favorable outcomes. In such settings, predictions don't passively forecast the future; instead, predictions actively shape the …

Partially Performative Prediction

2026-06-05 · Jaewook Lee, Tijana Zrnic arxiv

Performative prediction studies feedback loops that arise when predictive models are deployed in consequential domains. In these settings, deploying a model can change the population whose patterns the model aims to pred…
