Position: The Future of Bayesian Prediction Is Prior-Fitted

2025-05-29 · Samuel Müller, Arik Reuter, Noah Hollmann, David Rügamer, Frank Hutter

Training neural networks on randomly generated artificial datasets yields Bayesian models that capture the prior defined by the dataset-generating distribution. Prior-data Fitted Networks (PFNs) are a class of methods designed to leverage this insight. In an era of rapidly increasing computational resources for pre-training and a near stagnation in the generation of new real-world data in many applications, PFNs are poised to play a more important role across a wide range of applications. They enable the efficient allocation of pre-training compute to low-data scenarios. Originally applied to small Bayesian modeling tasks, the field of PFNs has significantly expanded to address more complex domains and larger datasets. This position paper argues that PFNs and other amortized inference approaches represent the future of Bayesian inference, leveraging amortized learning to tackle data-scarce problems. We thus believe they are a fruitful area of research. In this position paper, we explore their potential and directions to address their current limitations.

Survival In-Context: Amortized Bayesian Survival Analysis via Prior-Fitted Networks

2026-03-31 · Dmitrii Seletkov, Paul Hager, Georgios Kaissis, Rickmer Braren 외 arxiv

Survival analysis is crucial for many medical applications, but remains challenging for modern machine learning due to limited data, censoring, and the heterogeneity of tabular covariates. While the prior-fitted paradigm…

Modeling human decomposition: a Bayesian approach

2024-11-14 · D. Hudson Smith, Noah Nisbet, Carl Ehrett, Cristina I. Tica 외

Environmental and individualistic variables affect the rate of human decomposition in complex ways. These effects complicate the estimation of the postmortem interval (PMI) based on observed decomposition characteristics…

PFN-TS: Thompson Sampling for Contextual Bandits via Prior-Data Fitted Networks

2026-05-11 · Yan Shuo Tan, Kenyon Ng, Ruizhe Deng, Sumetha Loganathan 외 arxiv

Thompson sampling is a widely used strategy for contextual bandits: at each round, it samples a reward function from a Bayesian posterior and acts greedily under that sample. Prior-data fitted networks (PFNs), such as Ta…
