Random Language Model

2018-09-04 · E. DeGiuli

Many complex generative systems use languages to create structured objects. We consider a model of random languages, defined by weighted context-free grammars. As the distribution of grammar weights broadens, a transition is found from a random phase, in which sentences are indistinguishable from noise, to an organized phase in which nontrivial information is carried. This marks the emergence of deep structure in the language, and can be understood by a competition between energy and entropy.

The Randomness Floor: Measuring Intrinsic Non-Randomness in Language Model Token Distributions

2026-03-29 · Jarosław Hryszko arxiv

Language models cannot be random. This paper introduces Entropic Deviation (ED), the normalised KL divergence between a model's token distribution and the uniform distribution, and measures it systematically across 31,20…

Evaluating the Quality of Randomness and Entropy in Tasks Supported by Large Language Models

2025-10-14 · Rabimba Karanjai, Yang Lu, Ranjith Chodavarapu, Lei Xu 외 arxiv

The rapid advancement of large language model (LLM) technology has led to diverse applications, many of which inherently require randomness, such as stochastic decision-making, gaming, scheduling, AI agents, and cryptogr…

Strings from the Library of Babel: Random Sampling as a Strong Baseline for Prompt Optimisation

2023-11-16 · Yao Lu, Jiayi Wang, Raphael Tang, Sebastian Riedel 외

Recent prompt optimisation approaches use the generative nature of language models to produce prompts -- even rivaling the performance of human-curated prompts. In this paper, we demonstrate that randomly sampling tokens…
