Real-time Transient Simulation and Studies of Offshore Wind Turbines

2021-08-19 · Thai-Thanh Nguyen, Tuyen Vu, Thomas Ortmeyer, George Stefopoulos, Greg Pedrick, Jason MacDowell

This paper presents developed real-time simulation models for offshore wind turbine generators in compliance with industry standards. The critical control functions such as negative sequence injection, sequence current limit, voltage ride through, and power curtailments are designed to meet the industry requirements for future electromagnetic transient (EMT) testing and controls of offshore wind farms. Average-value and switching detailed models are developed in the Opal-RT real-time simulator. Real-time capabilities of these models are compared to show the effectiveness of the average-value model in terms of accuracy and computation efficiency. Studies of balanced and unbalanced faults illustrate the ability of the proposed turbine models to inject active and reactive currents during fault events. The models are validated against the second-generation generic wind turbine model proposed by Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC). Validation results reveal that the proposed models are aligned with the WECC generic model. In addition, the models provide an extended capability in mitigating the active power oscillation during unbalanced fault conditions.

Transient Synchronization Stability Analysis of Wind Farms with MMC-HVDC Integration Under Offshore AC Grid Fault

2021-10-25 · Yu Zhang, Chen Zhang, Renxin Yang, Jing Lyu 외

The MMC-HVDC connected offshore wind farms (OWFs) could suffer short circuit fault (SCF), whereas their transient stability is not well analysed. In this paper, the mechanism of the loss of synchronization (LOS) of this …

Small-Signal Stability and SCR Enhancement of Offshore WPPs with Synchronous Condensers

2023-10-10 · Sulav Ghimire, Kanakesh V. Kkuni, Emerson D. Guest, Kim H. Jensen 외

Synchronous condensers (SCs) have been reported to improve the overall stability and short-circuit power of a power system. SCs are also being integrated into offshore wind power plants (WPPs) for the same reason. This p…

Event-Triggered Non-Linear Control of Offshore MMC Grids for Asymmetrical AC Faults

2024-09-25 · Naajein Cherat, Vaibhav Nougain, Milovan Majstorović, Peter Palensky 외

Fault ride-through capability studies of MMC-HVDC connected wind power plants have focused primarily on the DC link and onshore AC grid faults. Offshore AC faults, mainly asymmetrical faults have not gained much attentio…

Configuration and EMT Simulation of the 240-bus MiniWECC System Integrating Offshore Wind Farms (OWFs)

2024-03-12 · Buxin She, Hisham Mahmood, Marcelo Elizondo, Veronica Adetola 외

As offshore wind farms (OWFs) become increasingly prevalent in Northern California and Southern Oregon, they introduce faster dynamics into the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) system, reshaping its dynami…

North Sea Wind Power Hub: System Configurations, Grid Implementation and Techno-economic Assessment

2020-06-10

In 2017, Energinet and TenneT, the Danish and Dutch Transmission System Operators (TSOs), have announced the North Sea Wind Power Hub (NSWPH) project. The project aims at increasing by 36 GW the North Sea offshore wind c…
