Reasoning about Independence in Probabilistic Models of Relational Data

2013-02-18 · Marc Maier, Katerina Marazopoulou, David Jensen

We extend the theory of d-separation to cases in which data instances are not independent and identically distributed. We show that applying the rules of d-separation directly to the structure of probabilistic models of relational data inaccurately infers conditional independence. We introduce relational d-separation, a theory for deriving conditional independence facts from relational models. We provide a new representation, the abstract ground graph, that enables a sound, complete, and computationally efficient method for answering d-separation queries about relational models, and we present empirical results that demonstrate effectiveness.

A Sound and Complete Algorithm for Learning Causal Models from Relational Data

2013-09-26 · Marc Maier, Katerina Marazopoulou, David Arbour, David Jensen

The PC algorithm learns maximally oriented causal Bayesian networks. However, there is no equivalent complete algorithm for learning the structure of relational models, a more expressive generalization of Bayesian networ…

Reasoning about Unmodelled Concepts - Incorporating Class Taxonomies in Probabilistic Relational Models

A key problem in the application of first-order probabilistic methods is the enormous size of graphical models they imply. The size results from the possible worlds that can be generated by a domain of objects and relati…

On the Independencies Hidden in the Structure of a Probabilistic Logic Program

Pearl and Verma developed d-separation as a widely used graphical criterion to reason about the conditional independencies that are implied by the causal structure of a Bayesian network. As acyclic ground probabilistic l…

Relational Causal Models with Cycles:Representation and Reasoning

2022-02-22 · Ragib Ahsan, David Arbour, Elena Zheleva

Causal reasoning in relational domains is fundamental to studying real-world social phenomena in which individual units can influence each other's traits and behavior. Dynamics between interconnected units can be represe…

Non-Parametric Inference of Relational Dependence

Independence testing plays a central role in statistical and causal inference from observational data. Standard independence tests assume that the data samples are independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) but tha…
