Public perceptions of Robotics and Artificial Intelligence (RAI) are important in the acceptance, uptake, government regulation and research funding of this technology. Recent research has shown that the public's understanding of RAI can be negative or inaccurate. We believe effective public engagement can help ensure that public opinion is better informed. In this paper, we describe our first iteration of a high throughput in-person public engagement activity. We describe the use of a light touch quiz-format survey instrument to integrate in-the-wild research participation into the engagement, allowing us to probe both the effectiveness of our engagement strategy, and public perceptions of the future roles of robots and humans working in dangerous settings, such as in the off-shore energy sector. We critique our methods and share interesting results into generational differences within the public's view of the future of Robotics and AI in hazardous environments. These findings include that older peoples' views about the future of robots in hazardous environments were not swayed by exposure to our exhibit, while the views of younger people were affected by our exhibit, leading us to consider carefully in future how to more effectively engage with and inform older people.

Failure-Aware Multi-Robot Coordination for Resilient and Adaptive Target Tracking

2025-08-04 · Peihan Li, Jiazhen Liu, Yuwei Wu, Lifeng Zhou arxiv

Multi-robot coordination is crucial for autonomous systems, yet real-world deployments often encounter various failures. These include both temporary and permanent disruptions in sensing and communication, which can sign…

Uninformed sacrifice: evidence against long-range alarm transmission in foraging ants exposed to a localized perturbation

2015-12-14

It is well stablished that danger information can be transmitted by ants through relatively small distances, provoking either a state of alarm when they move away from potentially dangerous stimulus, or charge toward it …

Dull, Dirty, Dangerous: Understanding the Past, Present, and Future of a Key Motivation for Robotics

2026-02-04 · Nozomi Nakajima, Pedro Reynolds-Cuéllar, Caitrin Lynch, Kate Darling arxiv

In robotics, the concept of "dull, dirty, and dangerous" (DDD) work has been used to motivate where robots might be useful. In this paper, we conduct an empirical analysis of robotics publications between 1980 and 2024 t…

Common (good) practices measuring trust in HRI

2023-11-20 · Patrick Holthaus, Alessandra Rossi

Trust in robots is widely believed to be imperative for the adoption of robots into people's daily lives. It is, therefore, understandable that the literature of the last few decades focuses on measuring how much people …

"Don't forget to put the milk back!" Dataset for Enabling Embodied Agents to Detect Anomalous Situations
