SELF-PERCEPT: Introspection Improves Large Language Models' Detection of Multi-Person Mental Manipulation in Conversations

2025-05-27 · Danush Khanna, Pratinav Seth, Sidhaarth Sredharan Murali, Aditya Kumar Guru, Siddharth Shukla, Tanuj Tyagi, Sandeep Chaurasia, Kripabandhu Ghosh

Mental manipulation is a subtle yet pervasive form of abuse in interpersonal communication, making its detection critical for safeguarding potential victims. However, due to manipulation's nuanced and context-specific nature, identifying manipulative language in complex, multi-turn, and multi-person conversations remains a significant challenge for large language models (LLMs). To address this gap, we introduce the MultiManip dataset, comprising 220 multi-turn, multi-person dialogues balanced between manipulative and non-manipulative interactions, all drawn from reality shows that mimic real-world scenarios. For manipulative interactions, it includes 11 distinct manipulations depicting real-life scenarios. We conduct extensive evaluations of state-of-the-art LLMs, such as GPT-4o and Llama-3.1-8B, employing various prompting strategies. Despite their capabilities, these models often struggle to detect manipulation effectively. To overcome this limitation, we propose SELF-PERCEPT, a novel, two-stage prompting framework inspired by Self-Perception Theory, demonstrating strong performance in detecting multi-person, multi-turn mental manipulation. Our code and data are publicly available at https://github.com/danushkhanna/self-percept .

Self-Reference in Large Language Models: The Introspection Threshold for Recursive Self-Improvement

2026-07-05 · Jiang Zhang, Bing Yuan, Qian Zhang arxiv

The pursuit of self-evolving AI raises a critical question: when is autonomous self-improvement sustainable rather than degenerative? Drawing an analogy to von Neumann's complexity threshold for self-reproducing automata…

Does It Make Sense to Speak of Introspection in Large Language Models?

2025-06-05 · Iulia M. Comsa, Murray Shanahan

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit compelling linguistic behaviour, and sometimes offer self-reports, that is to say statements about their own nature, inner workings, or behaviour. In humans, such reports are often at…

Me, Myself, and $π$ : Evaluating and Explaining LLM Introspection

2026-03-17 · Atharv Naphade, Samarth Bhargav, Sean Lim, Mcnair Shah arxiv

A hallmark of human intelligence is Introspection-the ability to assess and reason about one's own cognitive processes. Introspection has emerged as a promising but contested capability in large language models (LLMs). H…

RIV: Recursive Introspection Mask Diffusion Vision Language Model

2025-09-28 · YuQian Li, Limeng Qiao, Lin Ma arxiv

Mask Diffusion-based Vision Language Models (MDVLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in multimodal understanding tasks. However, these models are unable to correct errors in generated tokens, meaning they lack self-cor…
