ShadowDraw: From Any Object to Shadow-Drawing Compositional Art

2025-12-04 · Rundong Luo, Noah Snavely, Wei-Chiu Ma arxiv

We introduce ShadowDraw, a framework that transforms ordinary 3D objects into shadow-drawing compositional art. Given a 3D object, our system predicts scene parameters, including object pose and lighting, together with a partial line drawing, such that the cast shadow completes the drawing into a recognizable image. To this end, we optimize scene configurations to reveal meaningful shadows, employ shadow strokes to guide line drawing generation, and adopt automatic evaluation to enforce shadow-drawing coherence and visual quality. Experiments show that ShadowDraw produces compelling results across diverse inputs, from real-world scans and curated datasets to generative assets, and naturally extends to multi-object scenes, animations, and physical deployments. Our work provides a practical pipeline for creating shadow-drawing art and broadens the design space of computational visual art, bridging the gap between algorithmic design and artistic storytelling. Check out our project page https://red-fairy.github.io/ShadowDraw/ for more results and an end-to-end real-world demonstration of our pipeline!

SmartShadow: Artistic Shadow Drawing Tool for Line Drawings

2021-01-01 · ICCV 2021 10 · Lvmin Zhang, Jinyue Jiang, Yi Ji, Chunping Liu

SmartShadow is a deep learning application for digital painting artists to draw shadows on line drawings, with three proposed tools. (1) Shadow brush: artists can draw scribbles to coarsely indicate the areas inside …

Learning to Shadow Hand-drawn Sketches

2020-02-26 · CVPR 2020 6 · Qingyuan Zheng, Zhuoru Li, Adam Bargteil

We present a fully automatic method to generate detailed and accurate artistic shadows from pairs of line drawing sketches and lighting directions. We also contribute a new dataset of one thousand examples of pairs of li…

Compositional Image Decomposition with Diffusion Models

2024-06-27 · Jocelin Su, Nan Liu, Yanbo Wang, Joshua B. Tenenbaum 외

Given an image of a natural scene, we are able to quickly decompose it into a set of components such as objects, lighting, shadows, and foreground. We can then envision a scene where we combine certain components with th…

CoSE: Compositional Stroke Embeddings

2020-06-17 · NeurIPS 2020 12 · Emre Aksan, Thomas Deselaers, Andrea Tagliasacchi, Otmar Hilliges

We present a generative model for complex free-form structures such as stroke-based drawing tasks. While previous approaches rely on sequence-based models for drawings of basic objects or handwritten text, we propose a m…

Learning abstract structure for drawing by efficient motor program induction

2020-08-08 · NeurIPS 2020 12 · Lucas Y. Tian, Kevin Ellis, Marta Kryven, Joshua B. Tenenbaum

Humans flexibly solve new problems that differ qualitatively from those they were trained on. This ability to generalize is supported by learned concepts that capture structure common across different problems. Here we d…
