The Dynamics of Leverage and the Belief Distribution of Wealth

2023-04-07 · Bikramaditya Datta, Rajiv Sethi

The scale and terms of aggregate borrowing in an economy depend on the manner in which wealth is distributed across potential creditors with heterogeneous beliefs about the future. This distribution evolves over time as uncertainty is resolved, in favour of optimists if loans are repaid in full, and in favour of pessimists if there is widespread default. We model this process in an economy with two assets - risky bonds and risk-free cash. Within periods, given the inherited distribution of wealth across belief types, the scale and terms of borrowing are endogenously determined. Following good states, aggregate borrowing and the face value of debt both rise, and the interest rate falls. In the absence of noise, wealth converges to beliefs that differ systematically from the objective probability governing state realisations, with greater risk-aversion associated with greater optimism. In the presence of noise, the economy exhibits periods of high performance, punctuated by periods of crisis and stagnation.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecies, Quasi Non-Ergodicity and Wealth Inequality

2020-12-17 · Jean-Philippe Bouchaud, Roger Farmer

We construct a model of an exchange economy in which agents trade assets contingent on an observable signal, the probability of which depends on public opinion. The agents in our model are replaced occasionally and each …

Measures of physical mixing evaluate the economic mobility of the typical individual

2022-05-05 · Viktor Stojkoski

Measures of economic mobility represent aggregate values for how individual wealth changes over time. As such, these measures may not describe the feasibility of a typical individual to change their wealth. To address th…

A Study of UK Household Wealth through Empirical Analysis and a Non-linear Kesten Process

2021-07-05 · Samuel Forbes, Stefan Grosskinsky

We study the wealth distribution of UK households through a detailed analysis of data from wealth surveys and rich lists, and propose a non-linear Kesten process to model the dynamics of household wealth. The main featur…

Wealth dynamics in a multi-aggregate closed monetary system

We examine the statistical properties of a closed monetary economy with multi-aggregates interactions. Building upon Yakovenko's single-agent monetary model (Dragulescu and Yakovenko, 2000), we investigate the joint equi…
