The Robustness of Estimator Composition

2016-09-05 · NeurIPS 2016 12 · Pingfan Tang, Jeff M. Phillips

We formalize notions of robustness for composite estimators via the notion of a breakdown point. A composite estimator successively applies two (or more) estimators: on data decomposed into disjoint parts, it applies the first estimator on each part, then the second estimator on the outputs of the first estimator. And so on, if the composition is of more than two estimators. Informally, the breakdown point is the minimum fraction of data points which if significantly modified will also significantly modify the output of the estimator, so it is typically desirable to have a large breakdown point. Our main result shows that, under mild conditions on the individual estimators, the breakdown point of the composite estimator is the product of the breakdown points of the individual estimators. We also demonstrate several scenarios, ranging from regression to statistical testing, where this analysis is easy to apply, useful in understanding worst case robustness, and sheds powerful insights onto the associated data analysis.

Super-resolution Multi-signal Direction-of-Arrival Estimation by Hankel-structured Sensing and Decomposition

2026-04-29 · Georgios I. Orfanidis, Dimitris A. Pados, George Sklivanitis, Elizabeth S. Bentley arxiv

Motivated by sensing modalities in modern autonomous systems that involve hardware-constrained spatial sampling over large arrays with limited coherence time, we develop a novel framework for rapid super-resolution multi…

Nonparametric inference for interventional effects with multiple mediators

2020-01-16 · David Benkeser

Understanding the pathways whereby an intervention has an effect on an outcome is a common scientific goal. A rich body of literature provides various decompositions of the total intervention effect into pathway specific…

Difference-in-Differences with Compositional Changes

Finite Sample Analysis of Tensor Decomposition for Learning Mixtures of Linear Systems

2024-12-13 · Maryann Rui, Munther Dahleh

We study the problem of learning mixtures of linear dynamical systems (MLDS) from input-output data. The mixture setting allows us to leverage observations from related dynamical systems to improve the estimation of indi…
